The family of the late Martin (Marty) Tivnan would like to thank everyone who sent mass cards, flowers & Condolences Thank you to Clarkes funeral services, to Corina & staff of St Marys Naas. Thank you to all our neighbours, friends & family for supporting us at this sad time. The holy sacrifice of the mass will be offered for all.

Our Bishops have issued a Pastoral Letter on Immigration. In it they encourage us to welcome migrants and reject voices that attempt to sow division. A new group, Blessington Welcomes, has organised an afternoon in St. Joseph’s Hall for Sunday 24th November at 2.00pm.There will be music galore. Music is a language that is universal, and playing and sharing your own music is a wonderful way of beginning to feel at home. Everyone is welcome to come and share hospitality with those who have come to live among us. The traditional Irish Tea and biscuits will also be available.

Feast Days – 21st November – Presentation of the Blessed Virgin The Presentation of Mary is when, according to tradition, Mary’s parents, Saints Joachim and Anne, brought her to the Temple as a child to dedicate her to God. This event is celebrated by the Church every year on November 21. 22nd November – St. Cecilia, Virgin & Martyr Saint Cecilia probably lived in the second or third century, and tradition says she died about 177 AD. Although details of her life may be unknown to us, Saint Cecilia was one of the most revered early virgin martyrs of Rome, as evidenced by her name appearing in the Roman Canon of the Mass. She is the patron Saint of Music and Musicians.

Funding Appeal

Our Parish Finances are in a very fragile state. There are many reasons for this – dwindling congregations, lack of regular income, peoples’ own financial situations etc. Historically, our Parish account had been with the Ulster Bank. When that closed, we lost quite a frightening number of Standing Orders. So much so, we are operating from month to month at the moment. I am asking you to consider renewing your standing order with your Bank, and, if your resources permit, to increase your contributions. We need a regular income on which we can depend.

The offerings given at Mass on Sundays do not stay in the parish. They are for the diocesan salaries of priests, and for the support of parishes poorer than our own. The money we rely on comes from the envelopes, the standing orders, and whatever rental income we can generate from our buildings.

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

Prayer to Saint Cecilia O glorious St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr, you won the martyr’s crown without renouncing your love for Jesus, the delight of your soul. We ask that you help us to be faithful in our love for Jesus, that, in the communion of the saints, we may praise Him twice in our song of rejoicing for the Blood that He shed which gave us the grace to accomplish His will on earth. Amen.

Prayer for November Lord God, whose days are without end and whose mercies beyond counting, keep us mindful that life is short and the hour of death unknown. Let your Spirit guide our days on earth in the ways of holiness and justice, that we may serve you in union with the whole Church, sure in faith, strong in hope, perfect in love. And when our earthly journey is ended,  lead us rejoicing into your kingdom, where you live forever and ever. AMEN

Feast Days 4th November – St Charles Borromeo Charles Borromeo was the Archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584 and a cardinal of the Catholic Church.  Known as the loving reformer, Charles Borromeo cared about people and wanted them to know that the Church of God cared about them, too. His changes and reforms in the way the Church was organized, changed the way that the Church listened to the people—all of them, not just the rich and powerful. Not everyone appreciated St. Charles Borromeo’s work; on one occasion, a disenchanted priest attempted to assassinate him. While Charles was kneeling in prayer at the altar, the man pulled out a gun and shot him. The hand of God shielded Charles, however, and the bullet did not penetrate his vestment garments, only leaving a slight bruise. Saint Charles later passed away peacefully at just 46 years of age, on November 3, 1584.

Prayer to St. Charles Borromeo O St. Charles, you are invoked as the patron of all those who suffer with stomach ailments and obesity.  You are also called upon as a helper for all those attempting to diet and lose weight. Please intercede for me today and help me to control my desires and compulsions, so that I may fix my appetite on the glory of heaven. Amen.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Reflection Of Autumn As we watch leaves fluttering to the ground in the fall, we are reminded that nature’s cycles are mirrored in our lives.  Autumn is a time for letting go and releasing things that have been a burden. This is the right time to practice getting out of the way and letting Spirit take charge of our lives.

Prayer for Autumn We bless you; God of Seed and Harvest and we bless each other in this season of mellow fruitfulness. May the beauty of this world and the love that created it be expressed through our lives and be a blessing to others, now and always. And until we meet again, may God keep us in the hollow of His hand.

CARE OF THE EARTH  Seasonal eating: incorporate root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots and pumpkins into your autumn diet. These hearty foods are filled withnutrients to support your immune system through the colder months and they taste amazing.

Thought of the Week We May live Victoriously, not because we have any power within ourselves, but because when we give ourselves to god, He gives himself to us. This is the great key to humble self-confidence.

Feast Days 28th October – Saints Simon & Jude Simon and Jude were ordinary men, probably farmers or fishermen, but Jesus chose them ‘to make disciples of all nations’. Saint Jude is the Patron Saint of hopeless, lost, desperate, and impossible causes. Jude was a true internationalist, traveling throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, Turkey, and Persia with St. Simon, preaching and converting many people to Christianity. He was credited with helping the early creation of the Armenian Church, and other places beyond the borders of the Roman Empire. Saint Simon is the patron saint of leather tanners. He is said to be a cousin of Jesus. Simon was known for being rigorous in converting others while showing great devotion. His life is shrouded in mystery aside from mentions in the Gospels.  Tradition holds that both of them were martyred in Persia. Simon is traditionally believed to have been sawed in half, and Jude is traditionally believed to have been beaten with a club.

St. Jude Prayer for Healing St. Jude Pray for Us, Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, friend of Jesus, I place myself in your care at this difficult time., Pray for me; help me remember that I need not face my troubles alone. Please join me in my need, asking God to send me consolation in my sorrow, courage in my fear, and healing in the midst of my suffering.  Ask our loving God to fill me with the grace to accept whatever may lie ahead for me and my loved ones,  and to strengthen my faith in God’s healing power. Thank you, St. Jude, for the promise of hope you hold out to all who believe,  and inspire me to give this gift of hope to others as it has been given to me.  Amen.

Simon of Cyrene, Cross-bearer Heavenly Father, whose most dear Son, as He walked the way of The Cross, accepted the service of Simon of Cyrene to carry his physical burden for him: grant us each the grace gladly to bear one another’s burdens,  for the love of him who said,  “As you did it to the least of these my brethren, you did it to me,” your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Feast Days

22nd October – St John Paul II, Pope Pope Saint John Paul II was born Karol Wojtyla in the small Polish town of Wadowice. During World War II, when the Nazis invaded Poland, Karol secretly studied for the priesthood in an underground seminary established by the archbishop of Krakow. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1946. He was the first pope in many years who wasn’t from Italy. He travelled around the world, met with leaders of other religions, and spoke out against violence. On 2 April 2005, John Paul II had died at 84 years old, in his private apartment. On May 1, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Pope John Paul II, and Pope Francis canonized Saint John Paul II alongside Saint John XXIII on April 27, 2014.

23rd October – St John of Capistrano St. John of Capistrano was born 1386, Capistrano, Kingdom of Naples and died October 23, 1456. He canonized in 1690 and was one of the greatest Franciscan preachers of the 15th century and leader of an army that liberated Belgrade from a Turkish invasion. John of Capistrano helped bring about a brief reunion with the Greek and Armenian Churches.

POPE JOHN PAUL II’S  PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES This prayer was said during the Holy Father’s August 15, 2004 visit to Lourdes, France.

The Pope asked her among other things to “be our guide along the paths of the world.” Hail Mary, poor and humble Woman, Blessed by the Most High! Virgin of hope, dawn of a new era, We join in your song of praise, to celebrate the Lord’s mercy, to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom and the full liberation of humanity. Hail Mary, lowly handmaid of the Lord, Glorious Mother of Christ! Faithful Virgin, holy dwelling-place of the Word, Teach us to persevere in listening to the Word and to be docile to the voice of the Spirit, attentive to his promptings in the depths of our conscience and to his manifestations in the events of history. Hail Mary, Woman of sorrows, Mother of the living! Virgin spouse beneath the Cross, the new Eve, Be our guide along the paths of the world. Teach us to experience and to spread the love of Christ, to stand with you before the innumerable crosses on which your Son is still crucified. Hail Mary, woman of faith, First of the disciples! Virgin Mother of the Church, help us always to account for the hope that is in us, with trust in human goodness and the Father’s love. Teach us to build up the world beginning from within: in the depths of silence and prayer, in the joy of fraternal love, in the unique fruitfulness of the Cross. Holy Mary, Mother of believers, Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Amen.

Words from  St John Paul II It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the whole world more human and more fraternal.

St. John Capistrano Prayer O God, who raised up Saint John of Capistrano to comfort your faithful people in tribulation, place us, we pray, under your safe protection and keep your Church in everlasting peace. Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart.

Reflection of St. John Capistrano He was a tireless preacher, missionary and apostle; distinguished as an excellent jurist and statesman, but also as a mystic, theologian, wonderworker and even a warrior. He fought like a lion against his defects and the enemies of Holy Church.

Feast Days – 7th October – Our Lady of the Rosary Saint Pius V established the feast of Our Lady of Victory to thank God for the Christian defeat of the Turks at Lepanto. A victory attributed to praying the rosary. Pope Gregory XIII changed the name to Feast of the Holy Rosary–originally celebrated on the first Sunday in October in 1573.  The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary focuses on the intercessory power of Mary. It shows that when Christians are in danger, they can go to Mary. And when an individual is in pain, discouraged, or having trouble accepting God’s will, he or she can also go to Mary.

Rosary & Holy Hour  During the month of October, you are invited to join us in offering the Rosary for peace in our troubled world every Tuesday at 7pm in Blessington church. This will be followed by quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary Our Lady of the Rosary, you care for each of us with tender motherly love. You wish us to truly turn to you so that you may care for us as a mother. Please bring all of our needs before the throne of your Divine Son, and we particularly ask today that you pray that we and all people may grow in true devotion to you!

Hail Mary Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes This prayer is inscribed in the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel of the Basilica in Lourdes

Ever Immaculate Virgin Mother of Mercy, Health of the sick, refuge of sinners, Comforter of the afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; look with mercy on me. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favours; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure for their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with complete confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. Through gratitude for your favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues, that I may one day share your glory.

CARE OF THE EARTH  Flick the switch Turn off the light when you leave  the room. Turn off the TV if no one is watching it.

Feast Days

1st October – St. Thérèse St Thérèse was born in France. She always wanted to become a nun from a young age and joined the Carmelites in Lisieux when she was 15.  After a long struggle with tuberculosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: “My God, I love You!” Therese helped others with small acts of kindness. Therese’s body on March 26, 1923, from the “Pittsburgh Catholic” Paris, April 9 – The body of Sister Thérèse of the Infant Jesus has been taken from the cemetery of Lisieux, where it was buried in 1897, and carried to the Lisieux Chapel of the Carmel, which is to be its final resting place.

4th October – Francis of Assisi St Francis was born in Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone 1181 Assisi. As a boy, Francis attended school and learned Latin and French. In 1202 Francis took part in a war. He was taken prisoner and held for almost a year. In 1205 Francis planned to fight in another conflict, but on his way there he had a vision. He founded the Franciscan orders, including the Poor Clares and the lay Third Order. He and St. Catherine of Siena are the patron saints of Italy, and he is also the patron saint of ecology and of animals. Later in life, Francis reportedly received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ — marks resembling the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified — making Francis the first person to receive such holy wounds. He was canonized as a saint on July 16, 1228.

Miraculous Invocation to

St. Therese O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles… the greatest saint of Modern Times.” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention in silence here) and to carry out your promises of spending heaven doing good on earth… of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses.

Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfil your plea “to be made known everywhere” and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi O beloved Saint Francis, gentle and poor, your obedience to God and your simple, deep love for all God’s creatures led you to the heights of heavenly perfection and turned many hearts to follow God’s will. Feast Days

23rd Sept – St. Pius of Pietrelcina

Pio of Pietrelcina (born Francesco Forgione; 25 May 1887 – 23 September 1968), widely known as Padre Pio (Italian for ‘Father Pius’), was an Italian Capuchin friar, priest, stigmatist, and mystic. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Pio joined the Capuchins at fifteen and spent most of his religious life in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo. He was marked by stigmata in 1918, leading to several investigations by the Holy See. Despite temporary sanctions imposed by the Vatican, his reputation kept increasing during his life, attracting many followers to San Giovanni Rotondo. He was the founder of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital built near the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo.

After his death, his devotion continued to spread among believers all over the world. He was beatified on 2 May 1999 and canonized on 16 June 2002 by Pope John Paul II. His relics are exposed in the sanctuary of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, next to the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo, now a major pilgrimage site.

27th Sept – St. Vincent de Paul

Vincent de Paul, CM born 24 April 1581, commonly known as Saint Vincent de Paul, was an Occitan French Catholic priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor.

In 1622, Vincent was appointed as chaplain to the galleys. After working for some time in Paris among imprisoned galley slaves, he returned to be the superior of what is now known as the Congregation of the Mission, or the “Vincentians” (in France known as “Lazaristes”), which he co-founded.

He was renowned for his compassion, humility, and generosity. Vincent was canonized in 1737 and is venerated as a saint in both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.

Vincent died in Paris on 27 September 1660.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a charitable organization dedicated to the service of the poor, was established in 1833 by French university students. The society is today present in 153 countries.

It also recalls your many foundations, works of mercy, congregations, and societies. The Church gratefully remembers, your promotion of the priesthood. Inspire all Charitable Workers, especially those who minister, to both the spiritually and the materially poor. Feast Days 17th Sept – St. Cornelius Cornelius was a Roman priest who was elected pope during the lull in the persecution of Christians under Emperor Decius and after the papacy had been vacant for more than a year following St. Fabian’s martyrdom. He is the patron of earache, epilepsy, fever, twitching, and also of cattle, domestic animals, and the town of Kornelimünster, Germany, where his head is enshrined.  In June 251, Emperor Decius was killed in battle with the Goths; and persecutions resumed under his successor, Trebonianus Gallus. Cornelius was exiled to Centumcellae, Italy, where he died in June 253. The Liberian catalogue ascribes his death to the hardships of banishment; later sources say he was beheaded.

Minister of Eucharist September 2024 Church of Our Lady Blessington SAT 6PM: Theresa Ball, Geraldine McMulkin & Mary McCormack SUNDAY 10AM: Kay Clarke & Aisling Molloy

Feast Days 13th Sept – St. John Chrysostom. St. John Chrysostom is one of the Greek Fathers who has been declared Doctor of the Church. He is known for his preaching and public speaking, because of this his ‘writing and preaching stands out as a guide to the faithful during the history of the Church. He refused to live lavish life. In the first year alone, St John saved enough in household expenses to build a hospital. John was twice banished from Constantinople. In a cave near Antioch, he embraced extreme fasting and other ascetic practices, and studied the Bible continuously—allegedly memorizing most of it. After eight years as a hermit, John’s health suffered from his extreme fasting and penance, and he returned to Antioch to recover Forced to march for three months to his exile, John suffered greatly on this journey, as the harsh elements and rough treatment taxed his already frail health. He kept up his correspondence until the end; his letters to his friend the deaconess Olympias are a precious record of his last days. He died on Sept. 14, 407.

Mick’s first anniversary mass will be held on Saturday 28th September at 6pm in Church of Our Lady, Blessington.

The family of the late Nora Smith sincerely thank all who supported them in their recent sad loss. A special thank you to Fr. Kane and Deacon Malone for their kind assistance. Parents Prayer for Returning to school Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of my child/children. Please watch over them as they begin a new school year. Bless their teachers, school administrators, bus drivers, school support staff, friends and classmates. Keep them safe every day. I pray they may feel Your presence and know that You are always with them. Help them recall my loving words of support for them. Give them wisdom to make good choices, and an openness to learn new things. Fill them with knowledge and positive thinking. Help them overcome obstacles and shield them from negativity. Surround my child/children with good friends who also know and love You. Help them treat each other with kindness, fairness, and respect. May they treat each person they encounter as another child of God. Grant them the Grace to place their trust in You so they may know Your peace. Amen

From the writings of St John Chrysostom If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the Church door you will not find him in the Chalice. Prayer is the place of refuge for every worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a source of constant happiness, a protection against sadness. Happiness can only be achieved by looking inward and learning to enjoy whatever life has, and this requires transforming greed into gratitude. When we teach our children to be good, to be gentle and forgiving (all these are attributes of God) to be generous, to love their fellow human beings, to regard this present age as nothing, we instil virtue in their souls and reveal the image of God within them. Why not learn to enjoy the little things, there are so many of them.
