In the Catholic Church, June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  A popular prayer for the month is the Memorare to the Sacred Heart, which asks for the Sacred Heart’s help and mercy.  Memorare to the Sacred Heart: “Remember, O most sweet Jesus, that no one who has had recourse to Thy Sacred Heart, implored its help, or sought its mercy was ever abandoned. Encouraged with confidence, O tenderest of hearts, we present ourselves before Thee, crushed beneath the weight of our sins. In our misery, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, despise not our simple prayers, but mercifully grant our requests.”. Amen

Sacred Heart Novena This Novena is for the nine days leading to the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which falls this year on 27th June. Maybe you will pray it alone, with family or friends or as part of a Parish Group. Wherever and however you walk these days, know that his heart is there for you.

Novena Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, your heart was moved with love for those who came for help in their need. You healed the sick, you fed the hungry, you forgave sinners, you cried over Jerusalem. Above all, you showed to those who were prepared to listen the way to true life, for you are the Way, the Truth and  the Life. Lord, your heart is all moved today by your people and their many needs. Open my heart to hear your word, to accept your love and to respond to your call. In particular, I beg you to grant me the favour I ask during this Novena (make your request silently),  provided that it will contribute to my own eternal good and to the  building up of your kingdom of love, peace and justice here on earth. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. Amen

Prayer St. Kevin of Glendalough St. Kevin, Abbot of Glendalough, you were a shining example of holiness, a man of deep prayer and love for God’s creation. Intercede for us, that we may follow your example, growing in faith, hope, and charity. May we, like you, be attentive to the beauty of the world and the presence of God in all things. Pray for us, St. Kevin, and help us to live lives that are pleasing to God. Amen

Popes Intentions for JUNE 2025 THAT THE WORLD MAY GROW IN COMPASSION Let us pray that each one of us might find consolation in a personal relat1onsh1p with Jesus, and from his Heart, learn to have compassion on the world.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you.  Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025. Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year. Many travel abroad for pilgrimage, but a pilgrimage can also take place with the abundant Christian locations we have within our own Diocese. An exhibition ‘Pockets of Hope’ has been set up in the four Jubilee Churches in our Archdiocese: -St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral,  Marlborough Street. -Our Lady of Lourdes, Sean McDermott Street. -Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, City Quay. -St. Andrew’s Church, Westland Row. There is a further display in St. Kevin’s Parish Church, Glendalough.

The Jubilee Prayer Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom. May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally. May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

Prayer before exam Father, Be with me as I take this exam  Keep my mind alert and my memory sharp. Calm my nerves and help me concentrate. I know that you walk with me, Guiding my path and inspiring my heart. I pray that I would feel you with me, And that your friendship would soften the pressure I feel I pray that I would pass this exam and go on to new things with you. Thank you for your peace and your love in my life. Thank you for your kindness and care for me. Amen.

Prayer Before Exams O great St. Joseph of Cupertino who, by your prayers, obtained from God to be asked at your examination only the propositions which you know, pray that I, like you, may succeed in the examination which lies before me. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be loved. Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH Be gentle with the earth.

Thought of the Week God acts in humility, in silence, in the little things

Feast Days – 20th May – St Bernardine St Bernadine was born in 1380 near Siena in Italy. As a young man he took charge of a hospital in Siena during the plague. He then became a Franciscan priest and travelled through Italy preaching with great success. He promoted devotion to the Holy Name and to St Joseph. St Bernadine is patron saint of respiratory illnesses. He died in 1444. 22nd May – St Rita of Cascia St Rita is known as the “Saint of the Impossible” because of her amazing answers to prayers, as well as the remarkable events of her own life.  St. Rita wanted to become a nun, but in obedience to her aged parents, she married. Her husband caused her much suffering, but she repaid his cruelty with prayer and kindness. During her 18-year marriage, she bore and raised two sons. After her husband was killed in a brawl and her sons had died, Rita tried to join the Augustinian nuns in Cascia.  St. Rita of Cascia is known as the patron saint of impossible causes. Popes Intentions  for May 2025 FOR WORKING CONDITIONS Let us pray that through work, each person might find fulfilment, families might be sustained in dignity, and that society might be humanised.

Prayer to the Virgin Mary for the Month of May O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me, That you are my Mother and my protector. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart To aid me in my need. Amen

Prayer to St. Rita O powerful St. Rita, rightly called Saint of the Impossible, I come to you with confidence in my great need. You know well my trials, for you yourself were many times burdened in this life. Come to my help, speak for me, pray with me, intercede on my behalf before the Father. I know that God has a most generous heart and that he is a most loving Father. Join your prayers to mine and obtain for me the grace I desire (here mention your request). You who were so very pleasing to God on earth and are so much so now in heaven, I promise to use this favour, when granted, to better my life, to proclaim God’s mercy, and to make you more widely known and loved. Amen.

Prayer to St Bernardine ” Saint Bernardine of Siena, words were very important to you. You spent most of your life speaking the golden words of Jesus’ mercy and his Holy Name. And you abhorred words that were shameful. Pray for us that we may always choose to speak Jesus’ name with reverence and choose words of love over words of shame. Amen.

Amen

Feast Days – 13th May – Our Lady of Fatima. Our Lady of Fatima refers to the Marian apparitions witnessed by three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, reported seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary, who revealed messages and requested prayers for world peace. The apparitions took place on the 13th of each month from May to October 1917. She urged all, to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners. Before he became Pope Benedict XVI, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said that the central message of Fatima is what the Church has always taught: prayer, penance, and conversion. 16th May – St Brendan. St Brendan was a Kerryman who was born in 486. He studied at Clonard under Finnian. His name is connected with many places in Kerry such as Ardfert and Mount Brandon. He visited Scotland and reached the Hebrides and possibly areas beyond. Brendan the Navigator is known as the patron saint of sailors and the United States Navy. He is the patron of those who are afraid because he himself was fearless in setting out into uncharted water and in uncertain circumstances. He founded a monastery in Clonfert in 568 and died there in 578.

Thought of the Week We hand over our worries to God and he hands over his blessings to us.

CARE OF THE EARTH Use rechargeable batteries Batteries are extremely dangerous for the environment and, unfortunately, only a fraction of these batteries gets to be recycled. The rest is thrown away, becoming a hazardous enemy of the environment. Two or three sets of rechargeable batteries along with a charger would prevent this from happening. The initial investment will definitely pay off shortly.

Feast Days – 5th May – Blessed Edmund Rice Blessed Edmund Rice (1762-1844) came from Callan, Co. Kilkenny. After his young wife’s early death, he sold his possessions and dedicated his life to the education of the poor. To advance the work, he gathered other like-minded men who took religious vows together to work for the Catholic education of boys. He is a model of patient and cheerful acceptance of the sufferings God sends, a true lay apostle and a deeply committed religious. 8th May – Blessed John Sullivan Blessed John Sullivan was born in Eccles Street, Dublin, on 8 May 1861 and baptised in St George’s Church of Ireland, Temple Street, and was brought up in the Christian tradition of his father. He went to Portara Royal School in Enniskillen and then studied classics and law at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Lincoln’s Inn, London. At the age of thirty-five he was received into the Roman Catholic Church and returned to Dublin, living a very simple lifestyle. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1900, was ordained priest in 1907 and then spent the greater part of his life at Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare. His reputation for holiness and as a person of prayer spread rapidly and he was always available to the sick, the poor and anyone in need. He died 19 February 1933. His declaration as blessed on 13th May 2017 at  St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin, was the first ever beatification celebrated in Ireland.

Thank You We want to say a sincere word of thanks to Tony, Regina and Gordon Clarke for their very generous donation to the parish for Easter. The Cross which we used for solemn veneration on Good Friday was donated was carved at a week’s notice. It is a work of art, the work of craftsmen, ideally suited to lifting our minds and hearts to God. May the Lord continue to bless them.

Popes Intentions  for May 2025 FOR WORKING CONDITIONS Let us pray that through work, each person might find fulfilment, families might be sustained in dignity, and that society might be humanised.

Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their own fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are born to help each other, no matter how difficult it is. Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”  Pope Francis

Please Pray for the College of Cardinals as they enter the Conclave to elect Our new Pope.

BLESSINGTON UNION of PARISHES St Mary’s Church Blessington, Co. Wicklow. 24th April 2025

Dear Fr. Gerry

On behalf of the Church of Ireland parishioners of St. Mary’s, Blessington, we wish to offer our sincere condolences to you and your congregation on the death of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis will be remembered as a man of deep humility and devotion. He was particularly empathic towards the poor and marginalised. His concern for the environment has been inspirational to many, not least through his Encyclical,

Laudato Si.

There is great sadness across the world as the loss of such an understanding and compassionate leader.

We join you in your grief.

Rev’d Niall Stafford & Joan Griffith

Prayer for the Conclave. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Heavenly Father, we pray in union with the whole Church for the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Cardinals. May the Princes of the Church listen attentively to Your Spirit during the conclave.

Amen

Thought of the Week Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. Joshua J. Marine.

Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025 Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year.

We are having FREE gardening classes in the Stables, Valleymount every Tuesday from the 8th of April till the end of  May from 14.45 until 16.45 (except for Easter holidays). They will be run by a very experienced teacher from Kildare and Wicklow Education Board. All seeds, compost and top soil will be provided free of charge and all plants grown can be taken home. The course will cover flower and vegetable growing as well as lawn care. Hope to see you there.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Popes Intentions for APRIL 2025 For the use of the new technologies Let us pray that the use of the new technologies will not replace human relationships, will respect the dignity of the person, and will help us face the crises of our times.

Prayer For April Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest. Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in  earth and heaven.  Amen

Tradition of the Hot Cross Buns This tradition of baking and enjoying buns with ‘holy cross’ baked in, are thought have come from many ancient sources including pre-Christian times, where in the Old Testament, Israelites baked cakes for their religious idols. Some historians argue that the ancient Greeks adopted this customs but then ‘blessed’ the buns with a cross.

Where did the Easter egg come from? In Medieval Europe, Christians didn’t eat eggs or meat during the Lent season, so they preserved the eggs laid during the period by boiling them and later gave them away as Easter gifts to children. However, according to some traditions, eggs symbolize the resurrection of Jesus — the shell representing the sealed tomb.

Thought of the Week Who am I to judge others?

CARE OF THE EARTH Always carry your own bottle of water i.e. non-plastic, Look for a bottle that is made of no pollutant material

Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025 Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year.

Amen

Holy Week

Many things have changed for me in the last year. For a start, I’m now in Blessington and Valleymount parishes, and getting used to new people, new ways of doing things. People ask politely whether I am settling down, and I answer that it is a process that has really started, and for which I’m grateful.

This week, we will be celebrating Holy Week by very similar ceremonies to the ones we used last year. But this year it is different, really.  The world around me is different. Geopolitical issues are different. The environmental threats are becoming more acute. And, above all, I am different, changed.

I’m sure it is the same for many people. Whatever happened to you during the year, family births, bereavements, change of school, job, illnesses, engagements, relationships, and, above all, your own journey towards God. You are not as you were last year.

So, this week, this Holy Week, we can all look back and see what has happened for me. And the Words of Scripture, the ceremonies, the people around me, will all speak to me in a new way of the most important event of all – the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Popes Intentions for APRIL 2025 For the use of the new technologies Let us pray that the use of the new technologies will not replace human relationships, will respect the dignity of the person, and will help us face the crises of our times.

Prayer to  St. John Baptiste de la Salle O God, You chose your blessed confessor Jean-Baptiste to give Christian education to the poor and to confirm young people in the way of truth, and through him You established a new religious congregation in your Church; grant that through his intercession and example, we may be inspired with zeal for Your glory and the salvation of souls, and be found worthy to share his reward in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Amen

Amen

Thought of the Week At least ten times a day affirm, “I expect the best and with God’s help will attain the best.”

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Prayer to St. Isidore of Seville  Almighty and eternal God who has created us in thine image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thy only begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech thee that through the intercession of Saint Isidore, bishop and doctor, during our journeys through the internet we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter. Father, we ask you this, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Francis of Paola O most holy Saint Francis,  God gives wisdom to the simple and makes the merest child wise. Pray that He grants me this reward He promises to the humble through your intercession. Help me always to make a good examination of conscience and confession. Amen.

POPES INTENTION  FOR MARCH FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.

Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025 Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year.

CARE OF THE EARTH Always carry your own bottle of water i.e. non-plastic, look for a bottle that is made of no pollutant material.

Thought of the Week Who am I to judge others?

Lenten Prayer Almighty and Everlasting God, You have given the human race Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of humility. He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man And giving His life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to You By following His example of suffering And make us worthy to share in His Resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO  KNOCK – APRIL 26 As we begin our Jubilee of Hope, it’s time to launch our 2025 Knock Pilgrimage. The pilgrimage has grown significantly in recent years. In 2024, over 3,000 people from throughout the Archdiocese of Dublin took part.  This year the theme of the pilgrimage will focus on the Jubilee year, and we are inviting partnerships of parishes to join us from throughout the Archdiocese. Partnerships who have not travelled to Knock in recent years are particularly welcome. The pilgrimage will provide us with an opportunity to gather as Diocesan community of faith to celebrate the Jubilee year. The pilgrimage takes place on Saturday, April 26, and will include workshops, outdoor walks, the Sacrament of the Sick and our pilgrimage Mass, which will be celebrated by Archbishop Farrell. We hope to welcome more young people this year and encourage our parish partnerships to invite them to attend. It’s a good time to consider booking your Partnership bus. The Choir of Many Voices from throughout the Archdiocese will be back for a third year under the able direction of Ciaran Coll. If you would like to join the choir (previous members will be contacted separately), or have any queries about the pilgrimage, please email knockpilgrimage@dublindiocese.ie. More details to follow.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Pope Francis has chosen the motto “Miserando atque eligendo”, meaning lowly but chosen; literally in Latin ‘by having mercy, by choosing him’.

Prayer for March Lord, as we step into March, grant us the courage to embrace new beginnings. Help us to let go of the past and trust in Your plan for our future. Fill our hearts with hope and determination. Amen.

Feast Days 25th March –  The Annunciation of the LordThe Annunciation of the Lord refers to the time when the angel Gabriel visited the Blessed Virgin Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of the saviour. Mary was the first to hear and believe that God would do what he promised the world. She also discovered that she would play a special role in God’s plan for salvation. Jesus would be formed in her womb, and she would care for him. Mary agreed to God’s plan because she wanted her will to be God’s will. And she was willing to accept the joy and pain that came along with it to bring Christ to a world that waited for him. On this day, we do not only celebrate the announcement to Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus, but also her willing acceptance of the news.

Prayer on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary O God, Who wast pleased that the eternal Word, according to the declaration of the angel, should take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Give to our humble petitions; and grant that we, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her prayers. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

POPES INTENTION  FOR MARCH FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.

CARE OF THE EARTH Spring Gardening. Take care not to disturb nesting birds and always check carefully before pruning hedges or shrubs. When you tidy and cut back winter growth in spring, remember it may be home to insects and amphibians, or even a hibernating hedgehog

Thought of the Week Penance and prayer prepares us for God’s implanting the seed that leads to Eternal life in God
