Our licence with the HSE for Day Care  expires at the end of June this year.

In recent years, we have experienced an increased need for space in the Coimín Centre, both for parish pastoral use and for other community groups. After much deliberation and reflection, we have informed the HSE that, from July, we can only accommodate Daycare two days per week, as was the original pre-COVID arrangement.  It is our hope that a suitable  long term solution for an extended Daycare service in the community will be found.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS There is only one cause of unhappiness, the false belief you have in your head, beliefs so widespread. So commonly held, that it never occurs to you to question them. – Anthony de Mello

Feast Days 25th March –  The Annunciation of the Lord The Annunciation of the Lord refers to the time when the angel Gabriel visited the Blessed Virgin Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of the saviour. Mary was the first to hear and believe that God would do what he promised the world. She also discovered that she would play a special role in God’s plan for salvation. Jesus would be formed in her womb, and she would care for him. Mary agreed to God’s plan because she wanted her will to be God’s will. And she was willing to accept the joy and pain that came along with it to bring Christ to a world that waited for him. On this day, we do not only celebrate the announcement to Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus, but also her willing acceptance of the news.

Prayer on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. O God, Who was pleased that the eternal Word, according to the declaration of the angel, should take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Give to our humble petitions; and grant that we, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her prayers. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Sunday Mass in Crosschapel.  Has returned to the normal weekly  11:30am Mass. Sunday Mass in Manor Kilbride  has also returned to the normal weekly 11am Mass

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Prayer for peace Lord Jesus, You came that the world might know the peace that You have experienced with the Father eternally. Yet, You taught us that in this life there will be wars and rumours of wars. Nations will rise against nations as violence works itself out in the world. However, through You, the world may be saved.

Prayer for March Lord, as we step into March, grant us the courage to embrace new beginnings. Help us to let go of the past and trust in Your plan for our future. Fill our hearts with hope and determination. Amen.

Daycare for the Elderly in the Coimín Centre.

The needs of the elderly are growing all the time. Indeed, with an aging population, it will be an issue for the country for years to come. At the moment, the Coimín Centre caters for the elderly five days a week. On Fridays there is an Active Retirement group. On four days we host the Daycare facility run by the HSE. This was facilitated, in part, by fundraising at the time. Most of the finance came from parish funds, aided by a grant from the National Lottery.

The parish has to cater for other age groups as well. At the moment, we have initiatives for younger families and children. On Wednesdays, the Play and Pray group uses the church for prayer and the Coimín centre for play. There is a clash with HSE Daycare on those days. The HSE was asked if an adjustment of time could be agreed, but sadly the answer was no.

We also offer catechesis and religious education for families whose children are in non-Catholic schools. (This is an increasing need, as more and more schools change patronage.)  They also use the church for prayer as part of their catechesis. They meet after school, on afternoons when the Daycare is using the Centre. The elderly are leaving in small groups, as their transport arrives. It is not an ideal classroom setting. The teachers have never complained, but it is an issue we need to address.

We cannot focus exclusively on one age group. We must serve younger families of the parish as well as the elderly. This is why we are now returning to the situation that existed before COVID. It is a pity that we have to. We don’t want to. The demand is there. However, it is inescapable that the needs of all age groups cannot be met at the same time.

There are major changes in the Catholic Church. Our congregations are diminishing. It is becoming more and more difficult to staff parishes. The Catholic church, indeed any church, is no longer the centre of community life for many. Society is shifting its focus, even in the last few years. That is more obvious now than it was even a decade or so ago,

when the Coimín centre was built.

We asked the Active Retirement group, which meets on Fridays, if they would be prepared to shift time to accommodate the Daycare, and their answer was a unanimous No. That meeting is, as they said, a “lifeline” for them. We assured them that they would not be moved. This, too, is a valuable service.

The provision of Daycare is the responsibility of secular authorities, not any charitable group. Up until recently, that burden has fallen largely on the voluntary sector – parishes, community groups, a few secular groups, charities and the like. It is time for Government agencies to assume responsibility. It is time to lobby councillors, TDs and those with responsibility for facilities in the community. That is precisely where the emphasis needs to be put.

We have given the HSE and parishioners as much notice as we could, so that alternative arrangements can be made for more Daycare facilities. There is a centre on the Kilbride Road, which the HSE sold to the County Council. It was seemingly earmarked for an interpretive centre for an expanded Greenway, which is now not proceeding. That could be one solution for Daycare.

The more people that act in good conscience, lobbying where it will be effective, the sooner a satisfactory outcome will be achieved,

especially for our elderly.

Feast Days – 17th March – St Patrick St Patrick was born very probably in the early years of the fifth century in the Romon colony of Britain. He was taken captive at the age of sixteen and brought to Ireland where he was sold as a slave. He tended herds on Slemish mountain for six years. His captivity had a very positive effect on his spiritual life. He prayed many times each day, his faith growing stronger and his love and reverence for God increasing. He escaped back home at the age of twenty-two. It was obvious to him that God was calling him to return to convert the Irish. The voice of the Irish was calling him to come and walk among them once more. He studied probably in France, returned to Ireland as a bishop c. 457-61 or as early as 432 according to another tradition. His mission was not immediately greatly successful but eventually he would make a tremendous number of coverts. Two writings survive: the latter to Coroticus, a protest to the soldiers of a British prince who had killed some converts and sold others as slaves, and his Confession, written near the end of his life, showing him as one living by the faith he preached and allowing Christ to direct his whole life. He died in 491, though again other dates have been suggested, 480 or as early as 461.

St. Patrick’s Prayer May the Strength of God pilot us. May the Power of God preserve us. May the Wisdom of God instruct us. May the Hand of God protect us. May the Way of God direct us. May the Shield of God defend us. May the Host of God guard us Against the snares of the evil ones, Against temptations of the world. May Christ be with us! May Christ be before us! May Christ be in us, Christ be over all! May Thy Salvation, Lord, Always be ours, This day, O Lord, and evermore. Amen.

Prayer for March Lord, as we step into March, grant us the courage to embrace new beginnings. Help us to let go of the past and trust in Your plan for our future. Fill our hearts with hope and determination. Amen.

Feast Days 11th March – St Aengus St Aengus (Oengus) was a monk in Clonenagh, Co. Laois, who came to the monastery at Tallaght at the end of the eighth century during the abbacy of Maelruain to spend a period under his direction. He was renowned for his devotion to both foreign and native saints and composed two martyrologies. He returned to Clonenagh, where he became abbot and bishop. He died around 824. 9th March – St. Frances of Rome St. Frances of Rome was born Francesca Bussa de’ Leoni, 1384 –1440 and was an Italian woman known for her kindness and faith. She helped many people in need. Frances started a special group of women called Benedictine Oblates. They lived a shared life focused on prayer and helping others, but without taking formal vows like nuns. She became a saint in 1608. On May 9, 1608, Pope Paul V declared Frances a saint. After her death, her body was found to be incorrupt, meaning it had not decayed. Her grave was found on April 2, 1638. Her remains were moved to the Church of Santa Maria Nova on March 9, 1649. Saint Frances the patron saint of automobile drivers and widows. Within the Benedictine Order, she is honoured as a patron saint of all oblates.

Prayer of St Frances Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Amen

Feast Days – 5th March – St Kieran. Kieran of Saigir was born in  Cape Clear, Co. Cork. He is numbered among the pre-Patrician saints of Ireland. He went to the Continent, where he was baptised and later ordained priest and bishop. He returned to his father’s territory, Ossory, where he lived as a hermit. Disciples soon  joined him and Saigir became a well-known monastery.

Prayer to St. Kieran of Saighir. O Saint Kieran of Saighir, beloved follower of St. Patrick and faithful pastor, you lived a life of devotion and brought the light of Christ to Ireland. I ask for your intercession in my life, especially for [mention your intention]. Please pray for my family and loved ones, that we may be kept safe and well. Intercede for all who suffer, and guide us in our journey of faith. Saint Kieran, pray for us.  Amen.

The Archdiocese is looking for a dynamic and motivated Parish Partnership Funding Support Officer to facilitate strategic fundraising initiatives across parish partnerships. This role is central to helping parishes adapt to evolving patterns of giving and ensuring sustainable financial development. To apply, please submit your CV and Cover Letter (maximum one page) outlining your suitability for the role for the attention of Cintia Mota, HR Administrator, at cintia.mota@dublindiocese.ie. The closing date for applications is Friday, March 20, 2026. Full details including Candidate Booklet can be found at https://www.dublindiocese.ie/vacancies/

Sale of Crosschapel Presbytery

Crosschapel presbytery has been sold for €980,000. When fees are deducted and the presbytery in Burgage Castle purchased (€512,800), the nett proceeds for the parish come to €414,000.

A significant portion of the proceeds will be reserved for pastoral needs (catechesis, adult education courses etc..).

From the remainder, some necessary building works will need to be completed. A stand-alone toilet for Crosschapel Church in the first instance, external cleaning of Blessington Church, roof repairs there, resurfacing of the car park, plus painting and carpeting the interior. We would never be able to afford these expenses without the sale of the presbytery. We have no estimates for any of these works at the moment. We will seek three quotations and choose from them as each happens. We will keep you informed.

Our day-to-day income just about keeps us afloat. As you can see from the last financial account issued (repeated below), we rely totally on the envelopes and the standing orders. We are grateful to those who continue to contribute, and rely completely on your generosity, especially in an era of declining congregations.

Rental income in the Coimin Centre has not been what it could have been. We need to address this urgently. Also, the cost of advertising in the newsletter has NEVER been increased since its inception. It will rise to €1 per word from March 1st.

The Wonder of Creation Water covers most of Earth – About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, mostly in oceans.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS “Everything, even sweeping, scraping vegetables, weeding a garden, can be a prayer, if we offer it to God.” St Martin de Porres

Feast Days 27th Feb – St. Gregory St Gregory of Narek (c. 950 – 1003/1011) was an Armenian mystical and lyrical poet, monk, and theologian. He is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2015. During his life he was called the ‘wonder worker’ because so many miraculous things happened through his intercession. There are many miracles attributed to St. Gerard including restoring life to a young boy who had fallen from  a high cliff. Because of the miracles, God worked through Gerard’s prayers with mothers. He is best known for his Book of Lamentations, a significant piece of mystical literature. St Gregory is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

Prayer of St. Gregory of Narek Prepare the earth for the day of light and let the soil bloom and bring forth fruit, heavenly cup of life-giving blood, ever sacrificed, never running dry all for the salvation and life of the souls in eternal rest. And though my body die in sin, with Your grace and compassion, may I be strengthened in You, cleansed of sin through You, and renewed by You with life everlasting, and at the resurrection of the righteous be deemed worthy of Your Father’s blessing. To Him together with You, all glory, and with the Holy Spirit, praise and resounding thanks, now, always and forever, Amen.

Prayer for peace Lord Jesus, You came that the world might know the peace that You have experienced with the Father eternally. Yet, You taught us that in this life there will be wars and rumours of wars. Nations will rise against nations as violence works itself out in the world. However, through You, the world may be saved.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS “The patient and humble endurance  of the cross—whatever nature  it may be— is the highest work we  have to do.” St Katherine Drexel

The Wonder of Creation Bees communicate by dancing Honeybees do a “Waggle dance” to tell other bees where to find flowers with nectar.

February is the month of  the Holy Family. February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family. Though the start of the Lenten season changes within the calendar year, a fair-sized portion of February gives us a space of time between the Christmas celebrations and the increased focus on  Jesus’s public life and ministry,  which occurs in Lent. It is a transition from the feast of Christmas to the fasting of Lent. Therefore, traditionally, February has become a time to recall the Holy Family. within the Holy Family is where Jesusspent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey.

Feast Days – 5th March – Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday- Is the first day in Lent. We place ashes on our forehead on this day to help us remember that we come from God and to God we will return some day. God is the beginning of all things and God is the end too. The ashes also remind us to turn to God with our hearts and minds. Since the Middle Ages, the Church has used ashes to mark the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, when we remember our mortality and mourn for our sins. In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days of lent, a time when we remember that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting and resisting temptation.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS Charity is the cement that binds communities to God and persons to one another.- St Vincent de Paul

Feast Days – 11th Feb – Our Lady of Lourdes  On this day in 1858, Our Lady first appeared to the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. Later Bernadette was to learn the mysterious Lady was the Blessed virgin, and to hear from her lips, ‘I am the immaculate Conception’. In 1992 Pope john Paul II instituted the world day of the sick to be held on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. 11th Feb – St. Gobnait St Gobnait is one of the best loved saints in west Cork but only traditions concerning her life survive. The main part of her life was spent in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, where there has always been a deep devotion to her, and which is a place of pilgrimage on this day and on Pentecost. Her gifts of caring for and curing the sick have been a significant part of her cult through the centuries. Happily, her memorial coincides with the World Day for the Sick. St. Gobnait is the patron saint of ironworkers, beekeepers & Ballyvourney.

Prayer to  Our Lady of Lourdes. O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comforter of the afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; look with mercy on me. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favours; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with complete confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. (mention your petition) Through gratitude for your favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues, that I may one day share your glory, and bless you in eternity.  Amen.

Funeral Ministry A course of training for funeral ministry teams will begin in the Coimin Centre, Blessington, on Wednesday February 4th at 7.00pm (cuppa available at 6.45), lasting two hours. It is a six week course on consecutive Wednesdays, conducted by Saule Cameron from the diocesan Mission and Ministry team. It concludes on Wednesday, March 11th. You are very welcome, whether setting up a new team, or refreshing and expanding a current team

Feast Days 3rd Feb – St. Blaise. Saint Blaise was a bishop in the city of Sebaste, part of modern-day Armenia. Though the year of his birth is unknown, we know that he lived in the fourth century. In prison, Saint Blaise was ordered to renounce his faith. He refused so was beaten with wool combs and beheaded. After his death, he was made a saint and has become the patron saint of wool combers, wild animals, candle makers and ailments of the throat. He died in the year 316.

The SVP Blessington Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who so generously supported the SVP Xmas Appeal over  the festive season. We are deeply grateful for the donations received through church collections, as well as the many boxes of food and hampers that were so kindly donated. Special thanks also go to the local business community who have always been major supporters of SVP and to those individuals who made personal donations. Your kindness and generosity have made a real difference, helping us support those less fortunate within our local community at a time when it is needed most. Thank you.

Feast Days. 28th Jan – St Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas was a famous Italian theologian from the 13th century. A Prayer for the New Year As the new year begins, I look to You for our hope, joy, and peace. Give me the courage to do all that You ask of me. Please also make me brave to not do what isn’t from You. Show me how to walk in grace and embrace Your love for me even more. Amen

Feast Days 20th Jan – St. Sebastian St. Sebastian was born in Gaul (France), he joined the Roman army in Rome and became a captain in the elite Praetorian Guard, secretly serving fellow Christians under Emperor Diocletian. He was also an early Christian martyr (c. 255-288 AD) known for his secret faith, When his Christian activities (encouraging martyrs, converting people) were discovered, Diocletian ordered him tied to a post and shot with arrows, leaving him for dead but surviving, only to be clubbed to death later.  He’s the patron saint of athletes, soldiers, and plague victims. He is often depicted tied to a post with arrows, though he’s more famously associated with surviving the plague due to prayers.

A Prayer for St. Sebastian Glorious St. Sebastian, powerful martyr and saint, Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not destroy you. I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. I ask for your intercession, that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs and my well-being. Protect me from pestilence, illness, and all dangers, visible and invisible. Strengthen my faith, grant me perseverance, and help me to live a simple, orderly life pleasing to God. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Bless and strengthen our love for each other. Help us to appreciate the value of family life and to live in harmony with all whom we come in contact with. Encourage us, we pray, to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with the Lord. Praise be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
