Sacrament of Baptism
Dear Parents
Baptism is the Sacrament (the Ceremony) by which a child becomes a member of the Christian family (The Church). It is an occasion of celebration and happiness. The words first heard at the River Jordan 2000 years ago – are celebrated once again “This is my Son/my Daughter – the Beloved” (Matthew 3.7) only now these words apply to you and your child
The happiness that God shares his life with your child today fills the whole Christian Community with joy. But Baptism is only a beginning – the seed of faith sown in Baptism needs love and care to grow. This will require prayer and belief on your part. The Sacrament by its very nature is asking questions of us …. What do we believe? What attitudes and values will we pass on to our child? To help answer some of these questions, a Preparation Meeting is held once a month in The Church of Our Lady, Blessington, to which you are invited to attend. The publication Your Baby’s Baptism by Redemptorist Publications can also be very helpful and will be made available to you at this meeting.
The choice of Godparents is important – for they could play a role in key moments in your child’s life, for example at First Communion & Confirmation.
On the practical/administration side of things, Booking is essential, and can be made by phoning The Parish Office 045 865327 or calling in any week morning 9.00am to 1.00pm. The times for Baptism in Church of Our Lady, Blessington are as follows:
1st Sunday of every month at 1.00pm & 3rd Saturday of every month at 4.00pm
The occasion of birth is a moment when we are aware that life is bigger than we are. Bringing your Child for Baptism is a public sign of our need for faith and trust in God’s love.
It is the experience of the Christian Community that those who walk in faith will not be disappointed.
“Do not be afraid for I am with you
I have called you by name
You are mine”
