Letter From Fr. Richard Crosschapel
I am sure that since the death of Fr. Kevin RIP (31-12-2022), many of you have looked at the parochial house at Crosschapel and wondered about its future now that there is no resident priest. I had hoped that it would be the residence for the parish priest when the three parishes of Blessington, Eadestown and Valleymount will only have one priest. On close inspection of the house and its Curtilage (both of which have a preservation order) it will require a lot of expense to renovate the property to bring it up to a good standard for living. Work will need to be done to the house roof and the stables. The electrics will need rewiring as will the heating and septic tank. There is also work needed on the Kitchen and the housekeepers’ quarters, plus general maintenance both outside and within the parochial house. I have asked a builder who is familiar with renovating old buildings to give me an approximate estimate of the renovation works, and he advised me that it would cost around €400,000 to do the work. As you can imagine the parish is in no position to pay for such a costly enterprise. Having consulted with the parish finance committee, we have concluded that the best approach for the parish is to sell the house at Crosschapel and use these funds to buy a new parochial house in Blessington. The proposal is to Keep the Church and its surrounding 6 acres and to continue to celebrate mass there every Sunday. We also propose to sell the parochial house and 16 acres to the side and behind the house. Doing nothing is not an option, as we will have to pay vacant property tax on a yearly basis, and this would be a very costly expense to the Parish. Going forward, I think this is the best approach for Blessington Parish. If anyone has another solution, I would be delighted to hear from you, through the Parish Office.
I am, Yours sincerely
Fr. Richard

MOTHERS DAY PRAYER Heavenly Father, we thank You for our mothers through whom Your gift of life begins and through whom we are nurtured into great human beings. We lift up all mothers to Your love and care. We pray for them, for their needs of strength and support to continue to nurture a family of love, in honour and love for You, our God.

CARE OF THE EARTH Buy locally produced food Eating fresh, local food consumes less fuel and packaging materials. Shipping products by truck, rail, flight, or boat creates pollution and takes a toll on the environment. Instead, shop at local farmer’s markets and grocery stores that stock locally sourced products. Alternatively, use a CSA (community-supported agriculture) service to get fresh produce regularly. Thought for the week God often comes to us in disguises.

Prayer for peace Lord Jesus, You came that the world might know the peace that You have experienced with the Father eternally. Yet, You taught us that in this life there will be wars and rumours of wars. Nations will rise against nations as violence works itself out in the world. However, through You, the world may be saved.
