We all know of people who promise a lot and do not deliver; maybe each of us is a bit like that. Or the opposite – the grumbler who does the job anyway even if with half-good grace. That is the gospel image today. Jesus prefers the one who does good rather than the one who talks about it. Jesus never looked down on the sinner because many of them believed what he said and did their best to do it. Our prayer moves outwards to give to others, the ‘prayer of the hands’. The sinner is praised for having faith, the prayer of the heart. The test of prayer is in how we love and try to be loving people in our lives.
In this context Pope Francis says: ‘Professing one’s faith in Christ doesn’t stop at words but must be authenticated by concrete choices and gestures, by a life marked by God’s love, a great life, a life with so much love for one’s neighbour’; this is echoing St Ignatius: ‘Love is shown in deeds not words’.
And: “You see that the love John speaks of is not the love of soap operas! No, it is something else. Christian love has a particular quality: concreteness. Christian love is concrete. Jesus Himself, when He speaks of love, speaks to us about concrete things: feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, and many concrete things. Love is concrete.’

Blessington Tourist Office is holding an Arts & Crafts Mini-Fair in aid of West Wicklow Cancer Support (WWCS) on Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd October in the Tourist Office from 9am to 5pm each day. Due to the pandemic, the WWCS were not able to organise their usual fundraisers such as coffee mornings, so we have decided to give them a helping hand. Furthermore, with our artists and crafters in mind, we thought that this occasion will increase the footfall into the office or outside (weather permitting) & moreover, wider exposure. The usual 10% that office takes will go to the WWCS & we would also ask for an extra 10% from you as a supporting gesture. There will be a raffle Tickets on sale in the Tourist Office now.

Issue 1323 September 13th 2020
24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – 13th September 2020
It is not easy to understand the mind of God. He sees goodness where we see none; he showers blessings where none seem to be deserved. Yet even with our limited vision we can be sure he is near us whenever we call him.
One of the meanings of this parable is that God’s forgiveness is unconditional and amazing. The huge debt is a way for Jesus to say that the forgiveness of the first man was like the forgiveness of God. None of us go through life without needing the forgiveness of God in things big and small. It’s like switching on the light in a dark room, or when an ugly scar heals on the body and we live in light and are beautiful again. The forgiveness is offered on trust: we are to trust that no matter what our past, the present is full of the brightness of forgiveness which flows around the world, as it flowed from Jesus on the cross and in his forgiveness of those who had tortured and killed him.
The forgiveness given is contrasted with the forgiveness refused. The only reason sometimes that we forgive another is to live like Jesus or when we know we are forgiven. C.S. Lewis wrote that ‘everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea until they have something to forgive’ (quoted in M Hogan, Journeying with Matthew).
With the help of Jesus, we must learn to forgive but also to help others to learn to repent and forgive.
Forgive us Lord, and may we forgive each other as you forgive us.

Issue 1322 September 6th 2020
23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – 6th September 2020
The gospel message is one of joy, rooted in the love & care of Christ for everyone. Today Jesus spells out our Christian family duty – to have a responsibility towards each other: we cannot stand by idly & watch others harm themselves.
Tough words today about correction. We don’t like the idea of people telling us off or trying to change us. We can see it in the wide perspective of the influence of a community or group, and of the call of Jesus to help us become better disciples.
He knows it’s a difficult area, so he offers different ways of keeping us all on the safe path. If you are concerned about someone talk to them directly, and then to just one or two people, and only later go to the community. This comes from the sensitivity of Jesus and from his desire to bring people to the better life through love and compassion.
A principal work of the gospel of Jesus is to encourage each other. An apostle, Barnabas, was known as the ‘son of encouragement’. In trying to help each other come to closer following of Jesus, an ounce of encouragement is worth a ton of exhortation! We often find that when, for example, we are trying to help a person in drug or gambling addiction: lectures don’t work.
All the commandments of Jesus and his way of dealing with us are done in the name of love. The second reading sums it up – ‘Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour; that is why it is the answer to every one of the commandments’.

Getting Back on Track Financially Most of us have some level of debt, but when unpaid debt becomes such a burden that it prevents you from getting out of bed in the morning, brings a sense of dread when answering the phone or opening the post, it is time to take control of the situation. The unfortunate reality is that due to the impact of COVID-19 many more people in Ireland may be struggling to pay their debts having recently lost their jobs or struggling to make ends meet on reduced incomes. The effects of problem debt on a person’s wellbeing & mental health can be severe and can prevent them coming forward for help but there is a solution to every debt problem & this is where the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI) can help. The ISI is the independent government body with four debt solutions to help people with all levels of problem debt – from credit cards to mortgages. It regulates debt advisors called Personal Insolvency Practitioners (PIPs). You could be insolvent if: you can’t pay your bills in full when they are due. You’re paying a little off each bill trying to keep creditors at bay. You’ve had calls and letters about missed repayments and threats of repossession. If you are insolvent & in arrears on your home mortgage you could also be eligible for a free consultation with a PIP under the State-funded Abhaile Scheme. The purpose of that Scheme is to help people in serious arrears to find the best available solutions, with the help of professional advisors. The priority will be to find a sustainable solution that keeps a person in their home, where possible. For more information visit www.backontrack.ie or freetext GETHELP to 50015 for a call-back.
