Issue 1311 June 21st 2020
TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 21st June 2020
God is always with us. He knows our every thought, word and deed. He loves us and constantly cares for us. He looks upon us and says, ‘Do not be afraid.’
Be proud of Jesus! In the gospel today Jesus says not to be ashamed of him or the word of God. We often say to someone, ‘I was really proud of you’; at other times we find ourselves standing up for an individual or groups of people who are being criticised. Jesus knows that in following him, we will find opposition, in what we might sometimes say or in our way of life. A person, young or old, may find themselves the only one in a family group who is a regular mass-goer, or who stands up for the principles in some moral issue. We find support in like-minded and like-believing people, or in people who may disagree with us but respect our point of view. We find support also in our practice of faith where we meet such people, also in prayer; as Jesus says, ‘every hair of your head has been counted’ by the Father who knows us and loves us through and through. We have a lot to be proud of in Jesus: his love and concern for all, especially the poor; his giving us a meaning in life, and his love which brought him against the powerful, even to death. Like Jesus, we too will find ‘the Lord at our side’ as the first reading proclaims, as we live our Christian life as best we can.

Coronavirus Poem.
We live in a scary
World today
It’s different than
Before
No more hugs kissing
Our happiness gone away
Like never before
The virus has taken our
Loved ones away
Families suffering
Like never before
The fear of the unknown
Has arrived
The worry of what will happen
Tomorrow to you and me
Coronavirus on our mind’s
Coronavirus everywhere
Our lives in danger
Like never before
We practice social distancing
Every day to keep the virus
At bay as we shop in different ways
Were asked to stay at home
Like never before
When will this
Virus ever go away
But I promise
I’ll love and pray for everyone
Suffering
Every day.

Issue 1310 June 14th 2020
THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (Corpus Christi) 14th June 2020
Today is our celebration that Jesus is present always with us, in signs we can recognise but not understand. It is a feast of the mystery of his presence, always close to his people.
Always a favourite feast day in Ireland and throughout the world, Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, is a chance to appreciate the Eucharist. It’s about Jesus giving his whole self to us – that’s the symbolism of ‘body and blood’. As we receive communion, we take into our lives, very deeply, the love of Jesus, shown in his death and resurrection. This is his gift – to nourish us and deepen our friendship with him and our faith in God. He also shares with us why he gives his body and blood – it is for the saving and betterment of the world. So, each time we receive communion we are joyfully receiving not only his love for us, but also the call to share that love. Receiving communion helps us to live our lives in love but also challenges us to live the message of that love. This can be with family, among friends and also in the wider world. Receiving communion means I want to do something for justice, peace and tolerance in my locality and the wider world. To receive is to do this ‘in memory of him’. To live in memory of Jesus is to live in actively sharing the life and love he shares with each of us. It is receiving the human and divine life of Jesus, so that through each of us the world may be a better place.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY 7th June 2020
The life of God is a sharing of life in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The call of the Christian is to share this life in family and in community with others, so that we are all sharers of faith, hope and love with others.
Whatever we make of the mystery of the Trinity, the readings today stress that God, no matter how we talk of God, is love. The god of tenderness in the first reading, and in the gospel God so loved the world as to send his son. St Ignatius Loyola speaks of the Trinity, looking down on the world, and saying ‘our lovely world needs to be saved’. They saw people in darkness and wanted to send the light of the world; in grief and wanted to send the joy of their life into the world. Trinity Sunday is the feast of God’s desire to be with us in the dark times of life to bring the light of the risen Lord. The Trinity is not all up in the sky! – they look into the world… the heartache, the violence, the depressions, the weaknesses and know we need help, so Jesus came among us, as one of us, God has skin and humanity. Our people need to be saved through love, and a just society. Our planet needs to be saved from the damage and hurt caused to it. May we, in the words of the second reading ’live in peace’ – with each other and with our planet. I bless myself today and always: in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
The coming of the Holy Spirit is a gift of God for all peoples: the sign of his presence is in the reconciliation, justice and peace we create among people. The feast today is both a gift and a call: a call to be the ones who make the Holy Spirit present among God’s people everywhere.
We can all probably remember our confirmation day. What we did that day; visits to relatives, a special treat, maybe being asked a question by the bishop. We were told that we were given the gifts of the Spirit. God’s spirit would always be with us in life to help us be good Christians. As baptism was a promise from God to be with us as an infant and always, confirmation was the same promise as we enter our teenage years. The gospel today is about one big gift of the Spirit – forgiveness. No matter what my past, I am forgiven. We all have a past. There is no sinner who cannot be a saint, no saint that is not a sinner. All of us have regrets – what we have done, people we may have hurt especially family. God casts sin to the end of the ocean when we are sorry and do our best. Then there are the signs of God’s spirit – peace, joy, self-control, forgiveness, gifts we would all love to enjoy. So the Christian life is very attractive. The spirit today is the Spirit of God’s love – Son for Father, Father for Son. And we are invited into it. Jesus’s love is for the whole person, and that includes everyone. Often we think he likes only bits of me. He looks at me whole and entire in love. Maybe this love can help me forgive myself for all I feel guilty and ashamed of. Forgive us Lord, as you have forgiven us.
