Feast Days. 1st October – St. Thérèse St Thérèse was born in France. She always wanted to become a nun from a young age and joined the Carmelites in Lisieux when she was 15.  After a long struggle with tuberculosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: “My God, I love You!” Therese helped others with small acts of kindness. Therese’s body was transferred on March 26, 1923, from the “Pittsburgh Catholic” Paris, April 9 – The body of Sister Thérèse of the Infant Jesus has been taken from the cemetery of Lisieux, where it was buried in 1897, and carried to the Lisieux Chapel of the Carmel, which is to be its final resting place.

Feast Days – 9^th Sept – St. Ciaran of Clonmacnoise Ciarán was born in around 516 in County Roscommon. His father was a carpenter and chariot maker. As a boy, Ciarán worked as a cattle herder .He was a student of Finian’s at Clonard and in time became a teacher, himself. Columba of Iona said of Ciarán, “He was a lamp, blazing with the light of wisdom.” In about 534, he left Clonard for Inishmore where he studied under Enda of Aran, who ordained him a priest and advised him to build a church and monastery. In 544, he finally settled in Clonmacnoise, where he founded the Monastery of Clonmacnoise with ten fellow companions. As abbot, he worked on the first buildings of the monastery; however, he died about seven months later of a plague, in his early thirties. His feast day is 9 September.

The Season of Creation The Season of Creation from Sept1st to Oct 4th, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, is an opportunity in our Liturgical calendar to notice and pray for creation in a special way. It can remind us of our part to play in the interconnected web of life, of the importance of caring for the myriad of life systems on our planet and how we can be part of the restorative care that brings peace and allows for resting places for all our species on this planet. This year’s theme is “Peace with Creation”. Inspired by Isaiah “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings and in quiet resting places” Ceremonies to mark the season of Creation will be held in the parish in September. Confirmation of dates will be given in early September.

The Season of Creation The Season of Creation from Sept1st to Oct 4th, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, is an opportunity in our Liturgical calendar to notice and pray for creation in a special way. It can remind us of our part to play in the interconnected web of life, of the importance of caring for the myriad of life systems on our planet and how we can be part of the restorative care that brings peace and allows for resting places for all our species on this planet. This year’s theme is “Peace with Creation”. Inspired by Isaiah “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings and in quiet resting places” Ceremonies to mark the season of Creation will be held in the parish in September. Confirmation of dates will be given in early September.

Feast Days. 31^st July – St Ignatius of Loyola Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was born in Spain in 1491 and initially lived a life focused on courtly love, he was a former soldier who became a saint, is known for founding the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) a religious order known for its focus on education and service and for his influential “Spiritual Exercises”.  His story can be presented as one of a man who transitioned from a worldly life to one dedicated to God, emphasizing his courage, determination, and desire to serve others.  St. Ignatius of Loyola is the patron saint of  the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), spiritual retreats, and soldiers.

A group of parishioners had a very enjoyable pilgrimage to Knock

to mark the Jubilee year of Hope 2025. On arrival, we were welcomed by a group of 16 second level students from the diocese of Leeds who are helping out for the Summer. They presented us with a program of events to mark St Therese’s International Day.

These included a talk on the life of St Therese and a rosary procession with the blessing of roses.

Large numbers availed of Confession in the Centre of Reconciliation which also provides a counselling service .A small group took time to do the Creation Walk which details the story   of Creation in 30 steps from the moment of the Big bang 13.6 billion years ago. It is well worth a visit for anybody endeavouring to seek a deep understanding of the Universe and our role in this great mystery.

The highlight for many was the concelebrated mass in the Basilica which attracted large numbers from Ireland and the UK in the celebration of the Eucharist. We were also able to avail of the anointing of the sick before mass.

The group enjoyed a welcome stop on the way home with a meal in Roscommon town.  We look forward to visiting this unique and holy place again next year.
