Feast Days 25th March –  The Annunciation of the LordThe Annunciation of the Lord refers to the time when the angel Gabriel visited the Blessed Virgin Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of the saviour. Mary was the first to hear and believe that God would do what he promised the world. She also discovered that she would play a special role in God’s plan for salvation. Jesus would be formed in her womb, and she would care for him. Mary agreed to God’s plan because she wanted her will to be God’s will. And she was willing to accept the joy and pain that came along with it to bring Christ to a world that waited for him. On this day, we do not only celebrate the announcement to Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus, but also her willing acceptance of the news.

Prayer on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary O God, Who wast pleased that the eternal Word, according to the declaration of the angel, should take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Give to our humble petitions; and grant that we, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her prayers. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

POPES INTENTION  FOR MARCH FOR FAMILIES IN CRISIS Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.

The Jubilee Prayer Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025 Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year. Many travel abroad for pilgrimage, but a pilgrimage can also take place with the abundant Christian locations we have within our own Diocese. An exhibition ‘Pockets of Hope’ has been set up in the four Jubilee Churches in our Archdiocese: -St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Marlborough Street. -Our Lady of Lourdes, Sean McDermott Street. -Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, City Quay. -St. Andrew’s Church, Westland Row. There is a further display in St. Kevin’s Parish Church, Glendalough.

CARE OF THE EARTH Spring Gardening. Take care not to disturb nesting birds and always check carefully before pruning hedges or shrubs. When you tidy and cut back winter growth in spring, remember it may be home to insects and amphibians, or even a hibernating hedgehog

Thought of the Week Penance and prayer prepares us for God’s implanting the seed that leads to Eternal life in God

Lenten Prayer Almighty and Everlasting God, You have given the human race Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of humility. He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man And giving His life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to You By following His example of suffering And make us worthy to share in His Resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.

God never tires of forgiving us;  we are the ones who tire of  seeking his mercy. Pope Francis

In 2024, over 3,000 people from throughout the Archdiocese of Dublin took part.  This year the theme of the pilgrimage will focus on the Jubilee year, and we are inviting partnerships of parishes to join us from throughout the Archdiocese. Partnerships who have not travelled to Knock in recent years are particularly welcome. The pilgrimage will provide us with an opportunity to gather as Diocesan community of faith to celebrate the Jubilee year. The pilgrimage takes place on Saturday, April 26, and will include workshops, outdoor walks, the Sacrament of the Sick and our pilgrimage Mass, which will be celebrated by Archbishop Farrell. We hope to welcome more young people this year and encourage our parish partnerships to invite them to attend. It’s a good time to consider booking your Partnership bus. The Choir of Many Voices from throughout the Archdiocese will be back for a third year under the able direction of Ciaran Coll. If you would like to join the choir (previous members will be contacted separately), or have any queries about the pilgrimage, please email knockpilgrimage@dublindiocese.ie. More details to follow.

17TH March

St Patricks Day

Mass in the Church of our Lady will be at 9.30am

Feast Days – 17th March – St Patrick

St Patrick was born very probably in the early years of the fifth century in the Romon colony of Britain.

He was taken captive at the age of sixteen and brought to Ireland where he was sold as a slave. He tended herds on Slemish mountain

for six years.

His captivity had a very positive effect on his spiritual life. He prayed many times each day, his faith growing stronger and his love and reverence for God increasing.

He escaped back home at the age of twenty-two. It was obvious to him that God was calling him to return to convert the Irish. The voice of the Irish was calling him to come and walk among them once more.

He studied probably in France, returned to Ireland as a bishop c. 457-61 or as early as 432 according to another tradition.

His mission was not immediately greatly successful but eventually he would make a tremendous number of coverts.

Two writings survive: the latter to Coroticus, a protest to the soldiers of a British prince who had killed some converts and sold others as slaves, and his Confession, written near the end of his life, showing him as one living by the faith he preached and allowing Christ to direct

his whole life.

He died in 491,

though again other dates have been suggested, 480 or as early as 461.

CARE OF THE EARTH The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth, you’re doing something good. Got a leaky tap? You might be dripping as much as 340 Liters of water down the drain every day, You can have it fixed easily.

Thought of the Week Life isn’t about finding yourself, Life is about creating yourself. George Bernad Shaw.

St. Patrick’s Prayer. May the Strength of God pilot us. May the Power of God preserve us. May the Wisdom of God instruct us. May the Hand of God protect us. May the Way of God direct us. May the Shield of God defend us. May the Host of God guard us Against the snares of the evil ones, Against temptations of the world. May Christ be with us! May Christ be before us! May Christ be in us, Christ be over all! May Thy Salvation, Lord, Always be ours, This day, O Lord, and evermore.

CARE OF THE EARTH Create a buzz with a bee-friendly garden. As well as making honey, bees are crucial pollinators, and spring is when they emerge, hungry and ready to work. If you can, plant early flowering plants like cheerful crocuses, delicate primroses, and elegant hellebores; these provide a vital source of nectar and pollen, ensuring our bees have the fuel they need. Even a small window box brimming with these flowers can make a difference.

Thought of the Week. The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved. Victor Hugo

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO  KNOCK – APRIL 26 As we begin our Jubilee of Hope, it’s time to launch our 2025 Knock Pilgrimage. The pilgrimage has grown significantly in recent years.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen

Feast Days – 5th March – Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday- Is the first day in Lent. We place ashes on our forehead on this day to help us remember that we come from God and to God we will return some day. God is the beginning of all things and God is the end too. The ashes also remind us to turn to God with our hearts and minds. Since the Middle Ages, the Church has used ashes to mark the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, when we remember our mortality and mourn for our sins. In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days of lent, a time when we remember that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting and resisting temptation.

Feast Days – 27th Feb – St. Gregory St Gregory of Narek (c. 950 – 1003/1011) was an Armenian mystical and lyrical poet, monk, and theologian. He is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2015. During his life he was called the ‘wonder worker’ because so many miraculous things happened through his intercession. There are many miracles attributed to St. Gerard including restoring life to a young boy who had fallen from a high cliff. Because of the miracles, God worked through Gerard’s prayers with mothers. He is best known for his Book of Lamentations, a significant piece of mystical literature. St Gregory is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

Feast Days – 17th Feb – St. Fintan . St Fintan was born in Leinster. He received his religious formation in Terryglass, Co. Tipperary, under the abbot Colum, and was deeply influenced by his penitential practices and the severity of the Rule. Finton made his own foundation in Clonenagh, Co. Laois. Under his direction Fintan developed a reputation for austerity. Fintan gave his monks very strict rules not to consume any animal products. The community did not have even one cow and so they had neither milk nor butter. The monks complained they couldn’t do hard work on so meagre a diet. A deputation of local clergy headed by Canice of Aghaboe came to urge him to improve it. He agreed for his monks, but he elected to keep to the strict diet himself Fintan of Clonenagh is regarded as one of three patron saints of county Laois which include Colman Mac ua Laoise  and Mochua of Timahoe He died in 603.

SHROUD OF TURIN REPLICAS  The Parish of St Kevin and St Kilian in Kilnamanagh-Castleview recently unveiled replicas of the Shroud of Turin during Masses at St Kilian’s Church, Kingswood, and St Kevin’s Church, Kilnamanagh. The replicas, now on display in both churches, offer sacred spaces for prayer and reflection. The Shroud of Turin, believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, bears the image of a crucified man. While its age and origins are debated, it remains a powerful symbol of Christ’s sacrificial love. The replicas will remain on permanent display in both St Kilian’s and St Kevin’s Churches.  Parishioners and visitors are welcome to view them during regular opening hours.

ACCORD

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Often in our culture, the Church’s teachings on marriage and family life are presented in a negative tone. Yet the basics of family life and love are what so many in our world dream of and seek to realise.

For over 60 years our diocesan agency for marriage and relationship care, Accord Dublin, has been there to support people, young and old, realise this dream. It does not work with a rulebook, but helps people find within themselves the ability to discern, to look at their own attitudes and relationships, and to see them in a different way, in the light of the message of Jesus Christ.

  • In primary and secondary schools, Accord Dublin helps students acquire an understanding of healthy human relationships and sexuality through its RSE programmes.
  • Couples preparing for the sacrament of marriage have the opportunity to reflect on their relationship and prepare their future lives together through Accord Dublin’s marriage education programmes.
  • And when times get tough, Accord Dublin’s counselling service is there to help individuals and couples explore, reflect upon and positively resolve any relationship difficulties they may be experiencing so that they and their families can live happy, healthy lives again.

Accord Dublin’s marriage and relationship services are open to everyone in need. Feedback from people who have experienced the services have been consistently very positive year in, year out. With the pressures of our world and society, we know that couples and families are struggling day to day. The services of Accord Dublin are needed more now than ever. It is for this reason that I ask you to support the work of Accord Dublin at this annual collection and to spread the word to all in need that Accord Dublin is there for them.

I pray for God’s blessing on you and your families.

Dermot Farrell

Archbishop of Dublin

CARE OF THE EARTH  The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us. Our changing environment prompts us to stop and think about how we live on our planet.

Thought of the Week Be Grateful, Let gratitude be your first thought in the morning and your last thought before you go to bed.

Feast Days – 11th Feb – Our Lady of Lourdes. On this day in 1858, Our Lady first appeared to the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. Later Bernadette was to learn the the mysterious Lady was the Blessed virgin, and to hear from her lips, ‘I am the immaculate Conception’. In 1992 Pope john Paul II instituted the world day of the sick to be held on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes 11th Feb – St.Gobnait. St Gobnait is one of the best loved saints in west Cork but only traditions concerning her life survive. The main part of her life was spent in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, where there has always been a deep devotion to her, and which is a place of pilgrimage on this day and on Pentecost. Her gifts of caring for and curing the sick have been a significant part of her cult through the centuries. Happily, her memorial coincides with the World Day for the Sick. St.Gobnait is the  patron saint of ironworkers, beekeepers & Ballyvourney.

POPES INTENTION FOR  FEBRUARY FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE Let us pray that the ecclesial community might welcome the desires and doubts of those young people who feel a call to serve Christ’s mission in the priesthood and religious life.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comforter of the afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; look with mercy on me. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favours; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with complete confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. (mention your petition) Through gratitude for your favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues, that I may one day share your glory, and bless you in eternity.  Amen.

Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Creatively repurpose unwanted items to put less trash into the world. Instead of throwing things away, give them another purpose by making jewellery, household accessories, or restyled clothing. Upcycling is fun and good for the earth; for example, you could turn an old T-shirt into a grocery bag or use cinder blocks to make outdoor planters. Experiment and look for new ways to reuse old items.

Thought of the Week Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get. Ingrid Bergman

Did you know… February is derived from the Latin februo which means purity or to cleanse. Because February usually has 28 days, once every 6 years, it’s the only month to have 4 full 7-day weeks. In the years that aren’t leap years (otherwise known as common years), February and March start on the same day of the week. Also, In February, the most important days are World Cancer Day, National Day of Sri Lanka, World Pulses Day, World Radio Day, International Mother Language Day, World NGO Day, National Science Day, and World Scout Day.

Feast Days – 3rd Feb – St. Blaise. Saint Blaise was a bishop in the city of Sebaste, part of modern-day Armenia. Though the year of his birth is unknown, we know that he lived in the fourth century. Saint Blaise left Sebaste to escape persecution. He made his home in a mountain cave and lived there, surrounded by wild animals, until he was found, brought back to  Sebaste and arrested. In prison, Saint Blaise was ordered to renounce his faith. He refused so was beaten with wool combs  and beheaded. After his death, he was made a saint and has become the patron saint of wool combers, wild animals, candle makers and ailments of the throat.  He died in the year 316. An account of his life was written 400 years  after his death.

February is the month of  the Holy Family. February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family. Though the start of the Lenten season changes within the calendar year, a fair-sized portion of February gives us a space of time between the Christmas celebrations and the increased focus on Jesus’s public life and ministry,  which occurs in Lent. It is a transition from the feast of Christmas to the fasting of Lent. Therefore, traditionally, February has become a time to recall the Holy Family. within the Holy Family is where Jesus spent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey.

Blessing Of Throats The blessing of St Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick. Using two crossed and unlighted candles, blessed on the memorial of St Blaise or on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the minister touches the throat of each person, saying, ‘Through the intercession of St Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from all ailments of the throat and from every other evil or from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.’

Child’s Prayer God in Heaven hear my prayer, Keep me in thy loving care, Be my guide in all I do, Bless all those who love me too Amen

Prayer to the Holy Family Dear Lord, Bless our family. Be so kind as to give us the unity, peace, and mutual love that You found in Your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

Saint Joseph, pray for the head of our family. Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he need to support and direct those under his care.

Mother Mary, pray for the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing. For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be.

Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Make them more and more like You. Let them grow, as You did, in wisdom and strength and grace before God and man.

Holy Family of Nazareth, by your intercession, love, and holy example, make our family and home more and more like Yours, until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with You.  Amen.

Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Provide water for wildlife Garden ponds are a great water source for wildlife but not everyone has the space. Even using an old washing-up bowl of water or a deep saucer of water on a windowsill can help. If you do have a pond, a prolonged freeze can mean problems for fish and hibernating frogs in ponds. Gently crack the ice with a stick to make a hole, or float a ball in the water to stop it freezing.

Thought of the Week Most of us would be upset to be called ‘Silly’. But the word Silly comes from the old English word ‘Selig’ and its literal definition is ‘to be blessed, happy, healthy and prosperous’. Zig Ziglar

Funding Appeal

Our Parish Finances are in a very fragile state. There are many reasons for this – dwindling congregations, lack of regular income, peoples’ own financial situations etc. Historically, our Parish account had been with the Ulster Bank. When that closed, we lost quite a frightening number of Standing Orders. So much so, we are operating from month to month at the moment. I am asking you to consider renewing your standing order with your Bank, and, if your resources permit, to increase your contributions. We need a regular income on which we can depend.

The offerings given at Mass on Sundays do not stay in the parish. They are for the diocesan salaries of priests, and for the support of parishes poorer than our own. The money we rely on comes from the envelopes, the standing orders, and whatever rental income we can generate from our buildings.

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

Feast Days. 27th Jan – St. Angela Merici. St. Angela Merici was born March 21in Italy. Angela received the gift of visions that inspired her to teach young girls about God and to form them for holy living. Young girls who would gather in Angela’s home each day to learn to be better Christians. when she was near 50, Angela went to Rome during the Holy Year of 1525 for the jubilee indulgence. On the way, she was suddenly and strangely struck blind and remained do for four months. Her sight was eventually restored on the return voyage. The Catholic Church canonized her as a saint in 1807. She is the patron saint of sickness, disabled and physically challenged people, and those grieving the loss of parents. 28th Jan – St Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas Aquinas was a famous Italian theologian from the 13th century. He was famous for reconciling theology and philosophy, which started the movement known as scholasticism. He spent many years in monasteries learning about religion. Thomas’s best-known works are the unfinished Summa Theologica, or Summa Theologian, the Disputed Questions on Truth and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Christian Scripture and on Aristotle also form an important part of his body of work. St Thomas is the patron saint of universities and scholars. He died in a monastery in 1274.

Prayer to St Angela Merici May the Virgin St. Angela never fail to commend us to Your compassion, O Lord, we pray, that, following the lessons of her charity and prudence, we may hold fast to Your teaching and express it in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

St Thomas Aquinas Prayer before study Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion. Amen

Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Create habitats (by not tidying up!) Leaving areas of your garden undisturbed, allowing fallen leaves, branches and other debris to form a natural mulch, provides a protective shelter for insects and small creatures such as toads and newts to tuck themselves away from the elements.

Thought of the Week The Giant in front of you is never bigger than the God inside of you

Feast Days – 20th Jan – St. Sebastian. St. Sebastian was an early Christian saint popularized by Renaissance painters and believed to have been martyred during the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian. In the centuries that followed his martyrdom, Saint Sebastian became well known for his intercessory power, especially in fighting off the bubonic plague in the fourteenth century. More recently, he has also been honoured as the patron saint of athletes because of his dogged perseverance. He died c. 288, Rome. 21st Jan – St Agnes Today, is the feast day of St. Agnes, celebrated on the anniversary of her martyrdom in 304. Like many early martyrs, Agnes was a member of a noble Roman family who practiced Christianity even though it was illegal. Because of the legend around her martyrdom, Saint Agnes is patron saint of those seeking chastity and purity. She is also the patron saint of young girls and girl scouts. Folk custom called for them to practise rituals on Saint Agnes’ Eve (20 January) with a view to discovering  their future husbands.

Thank you We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the planning and the organisation of the Epiphany service in Valleymount on Sunday 12th Jan. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025 This year’s prayer resource has been prepared by the community of Bose, an ecumenical monastery of brothers and sisters in northern Italy. As we celebrate 1,700 years since the Council of Nicaea, this worship service has, at its heart, the Nicene Creed. We are invited to reflect on the story of Martha’s confession of faith in Jesus as narrated in John 11: 17-27, and to contemplate Jesus’ provocative question to Martha: ‘Do you believe this?’ Texts for the main service and for the days of the octave of prayer con be found in the Spirituality and Reflection section of the website of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland: ctbi.org.uk, and on the website of the Dicastery for Promoting Christion Unity: www.chrisfianunity.va.

Prayer to St. Agnes Agnes, you refused to give up your faith; help us to be proud of our faith, to love it, to be strong in it, and to give witness to it daily. St. Agnes, patron saint of children, watch over the children of the world. keep them safe from harm; be with them in their hour of need; and always pray for them. Amen.

Prayer to St. Sebastian Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint, I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not finish you. I ask for your intercession that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ. Amen.
