Feast Days – 7th July – St. Maelruain St. Maelruain was an Irish saint who lived in the 8th century. He founded a monastery in Tallaght, near Dublin, and is known for leading a monastic reform movement called Céilí Dé. Maelruain emphasized a strict, disciplined life for monks, focusing on prayer, manual labour and avoiding worldly pleasures. He died in 792. 8th July – St. Kilian St Kilian was born in the parish of Mullagh in the diocese of Kilmore. With eleven companions he left Ireland and became known as the apostle of Thuringia and eastern Franconia. With Kolonat and Totnan he was put to death in 689. There is a very strong devotion to him in Wurzburg, where his remains lie, and also, throughout the Bavarian countryside.

Dear St. Kilian, I come to you today seeking your guidance and intercession. You were a brave and faithful missionary who dedicated your life to spreading the Gospel and converting others to Christianity. I ask for your help in living a life that is true to my faith and in sharing the love of Jesus with those around me. Please pray for me and for all those who seek your intercession, that we may find the strength and courage to persevere in living a holy and faithful life. May your example inspire us to follow in your footsteps and to be bold in sharing our faith with others. Thank you, St. Kilian, for your constant love and support. May I always honour and serve you with a heart full of gratitude. Amen.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you.  Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025. Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year. Many travel abroad for pilgrimage, but a pilgrimage can also take place with the abundant Christian locations we have within our own Diocese. An exhibition ‘Pockets of Hope’ has been set up in the four Jubilee Churches in our Archdiocese: -St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral,  Marlborough Street. -Our Lady of Lourdes, Sean McDermott Street. -Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, City Quay. -St. Andrew’s Church, Westland Row. There is a further display in St. Kevin’s Parish Church, Glendalough.

The Jubilee Prayer Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom. May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally. May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally

There will be a pilgrimage to Knock on Sun July 13th departing at 7.30am from the Blessington church carpark. The pilgrimage will include meditation anointing of the sick, Confession and mass at 3pm. For further details contact 086 1609293.

A Summer Prayer Long warm days… The pace of life slows… A time for picnics and rest in the shade… Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all your people. Amen.

Popes Intentions for July 2025 For information in Discernment Let us pray that we might again learn low to discern, to know how to choose paths of life and reject everything that leads us away from Christ and the Gospel.

Feast Days – 1st July – St. Oliver Plunkett St Oliver Plunkett was from Irish nobility, whose family supported King Charles I. He was Ordained in Rome in l 654,  he became a professor of theology from 1654 until he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. He ministered in Armagh though forced to work in a covert way during the suppression of priests. He was arrested and tried in Dundalk in 1679 for conspiring against the state. It was seen that Oliver would never be convicted in Ireland, and he was moved to Newgate Prison, London. He was found guilty of high treason for ‘Promoting the Catholic faith’, and was condemned to a gruesome death. He was the last Catholic to die for his faith in Tyburn and the first of the Irish Martyrs to be beatified in 1920.  He was canonised by Pope Paul VI on 12 Oct 1975. He is buried at Downdhire Abbey, England. His head is venerated in St. Peters Church Drogheda.

Feast Days – 24th June – The Nativity of John the Baptist . The Nativity of St. John the Baptist,  celebrated on June 24, commemorates the birth of Jesus’s cousin, John the Baptist. John was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth, who were very old and believed to be unable to have children. The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, telling him that Elizabeth would conceive a son and name him John. Zechariah doubted the angel’s words and was unable to speak until John’s birth. John was a special figure in Christian tradition, preparing the way for Jesus and baptizing him in the Jordan River. His birth, like Jesus’, was miraculous, announced to his parents Zechariah and Elizabeth by an angel.

A Prayer to John the Baptist. Amen

Popes Intentions for JUNE 2025 THAT THE WORLD MAY GROW IN COMPASSION Let us pray that each one of us might find consolation in a personal relat1onsh1p with Jesus, and from his Heart, learn to have compassion on the world.

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

The Archdiocese of Dublin. Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd June.

A Message from Archbishop Farrell about the Summer Dues initiative

Our readings at Mass today focus, for Corpus Christi, on Priesthood and the Eucharist. The people following Jesus were tired and hungry (Luke 9:11-17). Theywere in need of nourishment and healing, at every level. ‘Give them something to eat yourselves’, Jesus says provocatively to the Twelve, but they were at a loss. They had very little, just five loaves and two fish. The miracle recounted is that from what little they had, Jesus made so much. The call to ministry and to participation in the Eucharist is central to the life and wellbeing of the Christian community. We are grateful for our priests and for the service they offer. From what each one has, they pass on all we have ‘received from the Lord’ (1 Corinthians 11:23), and bring his healing presence and love alive. Gathered around Christ, and through the gift of his Spirit, each parish and partnership of parishes is called to mission. Please support your priests through the Summer Dues appeal. The generosity that you have towards your priests is indispensable. Please play your part, too, in a renewed and active involvement of all parishioners as together we nourish and support each other, counting the wonderful blessings of God in our lives.

Tax on Donation Scheme. The generosity that people show towards their priests is very reassuring. Your contributions can go further without any additional cost to you thanks to the tax relief available on charitable donations. With your help the parish can claim a tax refund from Revenue up to the value of 45% of your identifiable contributions amounting to €250 or more in any given year. Please use the envelope provided, giving your details so that the parish can contact you, to help process the tax rebate from Revenue. The parish can reclaim the tax no matter whether you are PAYE or Self-Assessed. This tax rebate from Revenue is now an important source of income for the parish.

There will be a pilgrimage to Knock on Sun July 13th departing at 7.30am from the Blessington church carpark. The pilgrimage will include meditation anointing of the sick, Confession and mass at 3pm. For further details contact 086 1609293.

Thought of the Week A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery while on a detour.

CARE OF THE EARTH Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

A Summer Prayer Long warm days… The pace of life slows… A time for picnics and rest in the shade… Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all your people. Amen.

A Morning Prayer of  Saint Columba of Iona. Be thou a bright flame before me, Be thou a guiding star above me, Be thou a smooth path below me, Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me, Today, tonight  and evermore. Amen.

Popes Intentions for JUNE 2025 THAT THE WORLD MAY GROW IN COMPASSION Let us pray that each one of us might find consolation in a personal relat1onsh1p with Jesus, and from his Heart, learn to have compassion on the world.

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

Prayer before exam Father, Be with me as I take this exam  Keep my mind alert and my memory sharp. Calm my nerves and help me concentrate. I know that you walk with me, Guiding my path and inspiring my heart. I pray that I would feel you with me, And that your friendship would soften the pressure I feel I pray that I would pass this exam and go on to new things with you. Thank you for your peace and your love in my life. Thank you for your kindness and care for me. Amen.

Prayer Before Exams O great St. Joseph of Cupertino who, by your prayers, obtained from God to be asked at your examination only the propositions which you know, pray that I, like you, may succeed in the examination which lies before me. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be loved. Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH Spend some time alone each day.

Thought of the Week Always carry your own bottle of water. (non plastic) Look for a bottle made in a non0pollutant material

“It is the month of June, The month of leaves and roses,  When pleasant sights salute the eyes, And pleasant scents the noses.” Nathaniel Parker Willis

Wishing to be a hermit, he crossed the mountains to Glendalough and settled in Disert Caoimhghin at the foot of the upper lake but disciples began to gather round him. Gradually the great monastic settlement grew and spread through the glen after his death in 618. 6th June – St Jarlath St Jarlath is said to have been a disciple of St Enda and was also taught by St Benignus. In the Catholic Church, June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  A popular prayer for the month is the Memorare to the Sacred Heart, which asks for the Sacred Heart’s help and mercy.  Memorare to the Sacred Heart: “Remember, O most sweet Jesus, that no one who has had recourse to Thy Sacred Heart, implored its help, or sought its mercy was ever abandoned. Encouraged with confidence, O tenderest of hearts, we present ourselves before Thee, crushed beneath the weight of our sins. In our misery, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, despise not our simple prayers, but mercifully grant our requests.”. Amen

Sacred Heart Novena This Novena is for the nine days leading to the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which falls this year on 27th June. Maybe you will pray it alone, with family or friends or as part of a Parish Group. Wherever and however you walk these days, know that his heart is there for you.

Novena Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, your heart was moved with love for those who came for help in their need. You healed the sick, you fed the hungry, you forgave sinners, you cried over Jerusalem. Above all, you showed to those who were prepared to listen the way to true life, for you are the Way, the Truth and  the Life. Lord, your heart is all moved today by your people and their many needs. Open my heart to hear your word, to accept your love and to respond to your call. In particular, I beg you to grant me the favour I ask during this Novena (make your request silently),  provided that it will contribute to my own eternal good and to the  building up of your kingdom of love, peace and justice here on earth. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. Amen

Prayer St. Kevin of Glendalough St. Kevin, Abbot of Glendalough, you were a shining example of holiness, a man of deep prayer and love for God’s creation. Intercede for us, that we may follow your example, growing in faith, hope, and charity. May we, like you, be attentive to the beauty of the world and the presence of God in all things. Pray for us, St. Kevin, and help us to live lives that are pleasing to God. Amen

From garden and woodland and hillside

Our full hearts are swelling, our glad

voices telling

The praise of the loveliest flower

of the vale

Oh Mary we crown thee with

 blossoms to-day

Queen of the angels and Queen of the May

Oh Mary we crown thee with

 Blossoms to-day

Queen of the angels and

 Queen of the May

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH. NoMowMay is one of the easiest ways to help and connect with wildlife, and the perfect way to start supporting nature in your garden (in May and beyond!).

Thought of the Week Clouds come floating into my life. No longer to carry rain or usher storm, But to add colour to my sunset sky – Rabindranath Tagore

A Summer Prayer Long warm days… The pace of life slows… A time for picnics and rest in the shade… Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all your people. Amen.

Give thanks daily for your blessings. Get the habit of thinking happy thoughts. Go out of your way to make other people happy. There is your formula for real happiness and enthusiasm

Feast Days – 20th May – St Bernardine St Bernadine was born in 1380 near Siena in Italy. As a young man he took charge of a hospital in Siena during the plague. He then became a Franciscan priest and travelled through Italy preaching with great success. He promoted devotion to the Holy Name and to St Joseph. St Bernadine is patron saint of respiratory illnesses. He died in 1444. 22nd May – St Rita of Cascia St Rita is known as the “Saint of the Impossible” because of her amazing answers to prayers, as well as the remarkable events of her own life.  St. Rita wanted to become a nun, but in obedience to her aged parents, she married. Her husband caused her much suffering, but she repaid his cruelty with prayer and kindness. During her 18-year marriage, she bore and raised two sons. After her husband was killed in a brawl and her sons had died, Rita tried to join the Augustinian nuns in Cascia.  St. Rita of Cascia is known as the patron saint of impossible causes. Popes Intentions  for May 2025 FOR WORKING CONDITIONS Let us pray that through work, each person might find fulfilment, families might be sustained in dignity, and that society might be humanised.

Prayer to the Virgin Mary for the Month of May O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me, That you are my Mother and my protector. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart To aid me in my need. Amen

Prayer to St. Rita O powerful St. Rita, rightly called Saint of the Impossible, I come to you with confidence in my great need. You know well my trials, for you yourself were many times burdened in this life. Come to my help, speak for me, pray with me, intercede on my behalf before the Father. I know that God has a most generous heart and that he is a most loving Father. Join your prayers to mine and obtain for me the grace I desire (here mention your request). You who were so very pleasing to God on earth and are so much so now in heaven, I promise to use this favour, when granted, to better my life, to proclaim God’s mercy, and to make you more widely known and loved. Amen.

Prayer to St Bernardine ” Saint Bernardine of Siena, words were very important to you. You spent most of your life speaking the golden words of Jesus’ mercy and his Holy Name. And you abhorred words that were shameful. Pray for us that we may always choose to speak Jesus’ name with reverence and choose words of love over words of shame. Amen.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you.  Amen

Feast Days – 13th May – Our Lady of Fatima. Our Lady of Fatima refers to the Marian apparitions witnessed by three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, reported seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary, who revealed messages and requested prayers for world peace. The apparitions took place on the 13th of each month from May to October 1917. She urged all, to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners. Before he became Pope Benedict XVI, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said that the central message of Fatima is what the Church has always taught: prayer, penance, and conversion. 16th May – St Brendan. St Brendan was a Kerryman who was born in 486. He studied at Clonard under Finnian. His name is connected with many places in Kerry such as Ardfert and Mount Brandon. He visited Scotland and reached the Hebrides and possibly areas beyond. Brendan the Navigator is known as the patron saint of sailors and the United States Navy. He is the patron of those who are afraid because he himself was fearless in setting out into uncharted water and in uncertain circumstances. He founded a monastery in Clonfert in 568 and died there in 578.

Amen

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima Our Lady of Fatima, Today, we pray for an end to the suffering and injustice that plague so many parts of the world.  Through the power of the Lord, you performed a miracle at Fatima and made the sun dance for thousands of people to see. Please intercede for those who are suffering. Amen.

PRAYER OF ST. BRENDAN “Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown. Give me the faith to leave old ways and break fresh ground with You. Christ of the mysteries, I trust You to be stronger than each storm within me. I will trust in the darkness and know that my times, even now, are in Your hand. Tune my spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make my obedience count for You.” Amen

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

Thought of the Week We hand over our worries to God and he hands over his blessings to us.

CARE OF THE EARTH Use rechargeable batteries Batteries are extremely dangerous for the environment and, unfortunately, only a fraction of these batteries gets to be recycled. The rest is thrown away, becoming a hazardous enemy of the environment. Two or three sets of rechargeable batteries along with a charger would prevent this from happening. The initial investment will definitely pay off shortly.

Feast Days – 5th May – Blessed Edmund Rice Blessed Edmund Rice (1762-1844) came from Callan, Co. Kilkenny. After his young wife’s early death, he sold his possessions and dedicated his life to the education of the poor. To advance the work, he gathered other like-minded men who took religious vows together to work for the Catholic education of boys. He is a model of patient and cheerful acceptance of the sufferings God sends, a true lay apostle and a deeply committed religious. 8th May – Blessed John Sullivan Blessed John Sullivan was born in Eccles Street, Dublin, on 8 May 1861 and baptised in St George’s Church of Ireland, Temple Street, and was brought up in the Christian tradition of his father. He went to Portara Royal School in Enniskillen and then studied classics and law at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Lincoln’s Inn, London. At the age of thirty-five he was received into the Roman Catholic Church and returned to Dublin, living a very simple lifestyle. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1900, was ordained priest in 1907 and then spent the greater part of his life at Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare. His reputation for holiness and as a person of prayer spread rapidly and he was always available to the sick, the poor and anyone in need. He died 19 February 1933. His declaration as blessed on 13th May 2017 at  St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin, was the first ever beatification celebrated in Ireland.

Thank You We want to say a sincere word of thanks to Tony, Regina and Gordon Clarke for their very generous donation to the parish for Easter. The Cross which we used for solemn veneration on Good Friday was donated was carved at a week’s notice. It is a work of art, the work of craftsmen, ideally suited to lifting our minds and hearts to God. May the Lord continue to bless them.

Popes Intentions  for May 2025 FOR WORKING CONDITIONS Let us pray that through work, each person might find fulfilment, families might be sustained in dignity, and that society might be humanised.

Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their own fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are born to help each other, no matter how difficult it is. Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”  Pope Francis

Please Pray for the College of Cardinals as they enter the Conclave to elect Our new Pope.

BLESSINGTON UNION of PARISHES St Mary’s Church Blessington, Co. Wicklow. 24th April 2025

Dear Fr. Gerry

On behalf of the Church of Ireland parishioners of St. Mary’s, Blessington, we wish to offer our sincere condolences to you and your congregation on the death of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis will be remembered as a man of deep humility and devotion. He was particularly empathic towards the poor and marginalised. His concern for the environment has been inspirational to many, not least through his Encyclical,

Laudato Si.

There is great sadness across the world as the loss of such an understanding and compassionate leader.

We join you in your grief.

Rev’d Niall Stafford & Joan Griffith

Prayer for the Conclave. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Heavenly Father, we pray in union with the whole Church for the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Cardinals. May the Princes of the Church listen attentively to Your Spirit during the conclave.

Amen

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

Pilgrimage for the Jubilee year 2025 Pilgrimage is an important component of a Jubilee year.

We are having FREE gardening classes in the Stables, Valleymount every Tuesday from the 8th of April till the end of  May from 14.45 until 16.45 (except for Easter holidays). They will be run by a very experienced teacher from Kildare and Wicklow Education Board. All seeds, compost and top soil will be provided free of charge and all plants grown can be taken home. The course will cover flower and vegetable growing as well as lawn care. Hope to see you there.

A Prayer for our Parish Heavenly Father, Bless our Church and our parish, And all the good work that goes on in them. May all who are Christians live and work together for the good of each other and the glory of your Name. May those who do not know you be brought by our example to a loving knowledge and peace with you. Amen
