Issue 1321 August 30th 2020
22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 30th August 2020
All the laws, customs and regulations of religion have only one end: to love God and our neighbour. Jesus is adamant that love is at the heart of true religion.
Jesus was a man who knew his own mind. Our first reading describes a man certain of his mission in life even when putting it into practice and it looks ahead to Jesus. His conviction ‘wearied him’ and made a mockery of him. The gospel incident has the apostles upset, especially their leader Peter, at what was the mission of Jesus in death and resurrection. Following him would involve the same sort of dedication, even to carrying the cross. Finding a goal in life is a grace from God. We hope we have found a goal ourselves, something big enough to live for. We want to hand this on to our younger people. We receive hundreds of different messages about what makes for meaning and happiness in life we want to discern what brings true meaning.
A good guide is from Pope Francis, with echoes of St Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises: ‘God’s voice, instead, never promises cheap joy. It invites us to go beyond our ego to find that true good, peace.’
“God’s voice and the tempter’s speak in different “surroundings”. The enemy (of the goodness of our human nature) prefers darkness, falsehood, and gossip; the Lord loves sunlight, truth, and sincere transparency.” (May 3rd, 2020). Maybe we can watch this week for what brings an uplift of peace and joy in our lives and follow the pathways of this peace and joy. Your will be done, o Lord, on earth as it is in heaven. Donal Neary SJ, Editor Sacred Heart Messenger

Issue 1320 23rd August 2020
21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 23rd August 2020.
Our Christian life will call on us at times to make a decision for or against Jesus, as for the apostles in today’s gospel. We know with him we have the message of the deepest human love we are capable of.
Peter got the keys of heaven. We think that these are keys to let people into heaven. We often see pictures of Peter with a bunch of keys in his hand. Keys are given when a person is trusted – the privilege of getting the keys of the house. Jesus entrusts Peter with being able to unlock the kingdom of heaven.
It is not just the afterlife. The kingdom of heaven is what Jesus brings on earth. He gives each of us keys to unlock that door to his kingdom. We unlock the door from the inside. Pope Francis has said when Jesus knocks at the door, he is asking to be let out from inside each of us: ‘ I think about the times in which Jesus knocks from within so that we will let him come out.’ (Address before the Conclave 2013).
Like Peter, we have the keys to let his message out – in our words and in what we do. The love of God is given to us to be shared in service, just as the word of God is given to us to be spoken both in our human words and in our lives. I can imagine Peter each day going inside himself to pray and think over what Jesus had done for him in his life, and opening his heart so that the love and mission he had received, would be given for the community of disciples. May I recognise your love in my life O Lord, and share this whenever I can, in word and deed.

Issue 1319 August 16th 2020
Saturday 15th August, Feast of the Assumption Holy Day Mass at 10am in Church of Our Lady, Blessington
20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 16th August 2020
The gift of Jesus in the Eucharist is a promise of his company forever in heaven. We share in his life now, and after our death in a new and different way. This is the joy and certainty of our faith.
Somehow or other Jesus was surprised by the mother’s faith when she asked for her daughter to be healed. He said he had come at this point in time only for ‘the lost sheep of the house of Israel’, as if he had enough to do in dealing with them. Her persistence won her the attention of Jesus as he realised that she too had great faith. Can we say that Jesus was surprised by the mother? And that he changed his mind, and realised that the time had come for him to go to the Gentiles? Our first reading has God bringing foreigners to his mountain, welcoming them all to his house of prayer.
There is a lesson here for welcoming our migrants and refugees. Also, a message to look beyond what we see at first when we meet people. We change our minds when we hear a person’s story or know the difficulties and the joys of their life. We change our mind about groups of people when we hear their backgrounds and see what we have in common.
In his message for the World Day for the Sick (February, 2020) Pope Francis says “Christ’s words of solidarity, comfort and hope, are for the very many simple people, the poor, the sick, sinners, those who are marginalized by the burden of the law and the oppressive social system.” Lord may your kingdom of compassion and of hope come among us.

Issue 1318 August 9th 2020
19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 9th August 2020
At times God is to be found where we least expect him. He appears in joy and anguish, in the mountain breeze and the sea storm. In our prayer we need the patience to wait for God to speak to us, and the faith to walk towards him when he calls.
Many times in life we need help from others. The sponsor in AA, the one who loaned a bit of money to get a house, the one who listened in times of stress and loss, the school run, a help to pray; we get through life with helping hands. The gospel today is about that. Jesus saves Peter from drowning. We all walk on water at times and need this help. Help in life comes from prayer – from Jesus himself and from Jesus in others.
There is the ordinary day to day help in family and among friends. In solidarity with our fellow human beings. Like neighbourliness, or just friendliness. We need to show solidarity not just with our immediate neighbours but with the world far and near.
When we show solidarity, we can be more than human. When we show solidarity, we are doing the work of God – we are our brother’s keeper, our sister’s keeper! God works through us. The helping hand of God is your hand and mine. Many are sinking today in addictions, mental health issues and poverty. They are like the sinking Peter – but together and like Jesus, we can lift up the sinking Peter! With solidarity, neighbourliness, friendliness and friendship.

Annual Novena to Knock Shrine “It is with great disappointment that we have to postpone the highlight of the annual pilgrimage season at Knock Shrine. I take this opportunity to encourage the people of Ireland & beyond to pray the Novena prayer in their own homes & parishes for the month of August so that we may be united in prayer. The Novena prayer can be found on our website. The proposed theme for this year’s Novena was ‘Faith in Changing Times’ Here at Knock Shrine as we respond to the present challenges of the coronavirus, we continue “to pray with you & for you” as we look forward with faith & hope to brighter days. We thank everyone for their patience & cooperation. May Our Lady of Knock keep you all safe” Fr Richard Gibbons
