Feast Days – 11th Feb – Our Lady of Lourdes. On this day in 1858, Our Lady first appeared to the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. Later Bernadette was to learn the the mysterious Lady was the Blessed virgin, and to hear from her lips, ‘I am the immaculate Conception’. In 1992 Pope john Paul II instituted the world day of the sick to be held on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes 11th Feb – St.Gobnait. St Gobnait is one of the best loved saints in west Cork but only traditions concerning her life survive. The main part of her life was spent in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, where there has always been a deep devotion to her, and which is a place of pilgrimage on this day and on Pentecost. Her gifts of caring for and curing the sick have been a significant part of her cult through the centuries. Happily, her memorial coincides with the World Day for the Sick. St.Gobnait is the  patron saint of ironworkers, beekeepers & Ballyvourney.

POPES INTENTION FOR  FEBRUARY FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE Let us pray that the ecclesial community might welcome the desires and doubts of those young people who feel a call to serve Christ’s mission in the priesthood and religious life.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes O ever-Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comforter of the afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; look with mercy on me. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favours; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with complete confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. (mention your petition) Through gratitude for your favours, I will endeavour to imitate your virtues, that I may one day share your glory, and bless you in eternity.  Amen.

The Jubilee Prayer Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever. Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Creatively repurpose unwanted items to put less trash into the world. Instead of throwing things away, give them another purpose by making jewellery, household accessories, or restyled clothing. Upcycling is fun and good for the earth; for example, you could turn an old T-shirt into a grocery bag or use cinder blocks to make outdoor planters. Experiment and look for new ways to reuse old items.

Thought of the Week Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get. Ingrid Bergman

Pope Francis has chosen the motto “Miserando atque eligendo”, meaning lowly but chosen; literally in Latin ‘by having mercy, by choosing him’.

In the years that aren’t leap years (otherwise known as common years), February and March start on the same day of the week. Also, In February, the most important days are World Cancer Day, National Day of Sri Lanka, World Pulses Day, World Radio Day, International Mother Language Day, World NGO Day, National Science Day, and World Scout Day.

Feast Days – 3rd Feb – St. Blaise. Saint Blaise was a bishop in the city of Sebaste, part of modern-day Armenia. Though the year of his birth is unknown, we know that he lived in the fourth century. Saint Blaise left Sebaste to escape persecution. He made his home in a mountain cave and lived there, surrounded by wild animals, until he was found, brought back to  Sebaste and arrested. In prison, Saint Blaise was ordered to renounce his faith. He refused so was beaten with wool combs  and beheaded. After his death, he was made a saint and has become the patron saint of wool combers, wild animals, candle makers and ailments of the throat.  He died in the year 316. An account of his life was written 400 years  after his death.

February is the month of  the Holy Family. February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family. Though the start of the Lenten season changes within the calendar year, a fair-sized portion of February gives us a space of time between the Christmas celebrations and the increased focus on Jesus’s public life and ministry,  which occurs in Lent. It is a transition from the feast of Christmas to the fasting of Lent. Therefore, traditionally, February has become a time to recall the Holy Family. within the Holy Family is where Jesus spent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey.

Blessing Of Throats The blessing of St Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick. Using two crossed and unlighted candles, blessed on the memorial of St Blaise or on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the minister touches the throat of each person, saying, ‘Through the intercession of St Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from all ailments of the throat and from every other evil or from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.’

Child’s Prayer God in Heaven hear my prayer, Keep me in thy loving care, Be my guide in all I do, Bless all those who love me too Amen

Prayer to the Holy Family Dear Lord, Bless our family. Be so kind as to give us the unity, peace, and mutual love that You found in Your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

Saint Joseph, pray for the head of our family. Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he need to support and direct those under his care.

Mother Mary, pray for the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing. For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be.

Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Make them more and more like You. Let them grow, as You did, in wisdom and strength and grace before God and man.

Holy Family of Nazareth, by your intercession, love, and holy example, make our family and home more and more like Yours, until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with You.

Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Provide water for wildlife Garden ponds are a great water source for wildlife but not everyone has the space. Even using an old washing-up bowl of water or a deep saucer of water on a windowsill can help. If you do have a pond, a prolonged freeze can mean problems for fish and hibernating frogs in ponds. Gently crack the ice with a stick to make a hole, or float a ball in the water to stop it freezing.

Thought of the Week Most of us would be upset to be called ‘Silly’. But the word Silly comes from the old English word ‘Selig’ and its literal definition is ‘to be blessed, happy, healthy and prosperous’. Zig Ziglar

The offerings given at Mass on Sundays do not stay in the parish. They are for the diocesan salaries of priests, and for the support of parishes poorer than our own. The money we rely on comes from the envelopes, the standing orders, and whatever rental income we can generate from our buildings.

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

Feast Days. 27th Jan – St. Angela Merici. St. Angela Merici was born March 21in Italy. Angela received the gift of visions that inspired her to teach young girls about God and to form them for holy living. Young girls who would gather in Angela’s home each day to learn to be better Christians. when she was near 50, Angela went to Rome during the Holy Year of 1525 for the jubilee indulgence. On the way, she was suddenly and strangely struck blind and remained do for four months. Her sight was eventually restored on the return voyage. The Catholic Church canonized her as a saint in 1807. She is the patron saint of sickness, disabled and physically challenged people, and those grieving the loss of parents. 28th Jan – St Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas Aquinas was a famous Italian theologian from the 13th century. He was famous for reconciling theology and philosophy, which started the movement known as scholasticism. He spent many years in monasteries learning about religion. Thomas’s best-known works are the unfinished Summa Theologica, or Summa Theologian, the Disputed Questions on Truth and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Christian Scripture and on Aristotle also form an important part of his body of work. St Thomas is the patron saint of universities and scholars. He died in a monastery in 1274.

Prayer to St Angela Merici May the Virgin St. Angela never fail to commend us to Your compassion, O Lord, we pray, that, following the lessons of her charity and prudence, we may hold fast to Your teaching and express it in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

St Thomas Aquinas Prayer before study Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion. Amen

Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  Create habitats (by not tidying up!) Leaving areas of your garden undisturbed, allowing fallen leaves, branches and other debris to form a natural mulch, provides a protective shelter for insects and small creatures such as toads and newts to tuck themselves away from the elements.

Thought of the Week The Giant in front of you is never bigger than the God inside of you

Funding Appeal

Our Parish Finances are in a very fragile state. There are many reasons for this – dwindling congregations, lack of regular income, peoples’ own financial situations etc. Historically, our Parish account had been with the Ulster Bank. When that closed, we lost quite a frightening number of Standing Orders. So much so, we are operating from month to month at the moment. I am asking you to consider renewing your standing order with your Bank, and, if your resources permit, to increase your contributions. We need a regular income on which we can depend.

The offerings given at Mass on Sundays do not stay in the parish. They are for the diocesan salaries of priests, and for the support of parishes poorer than our own. The money we rely on comes from the envelopes, the standing orders, and whatever rental income we can generate from our buildings.

Feast Days – 20th Jan – St. Sebastian. St. Sebastian was an early Christian saint popularized by Renaissance painters and believed to have been martyred during the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian. In the centuries that followed his martyrdom, Saint Sebastian became well known for his intercessory power, especially in fighting off the bubonic plague in the fourteenth century. More recently, he has also been honoured as the patron saint of athletes because of his dogged perseverance. He died c. 288, Rome. 21st Jan – St Agnes Today, is the feast day of St. Agnes, celebrated on the anniversary of her martyrdom in 304. Like many early martyrs, Agnes was a member of a noble Roman family who practiced Christianity even though it was illegal. Because of the legend around her martyrdom, Saint Agnes is patron saint of those seeking chastity and purity. She is also the patron saint of young girls and girl scouts. Folk custom called for them to practise rituals on Saint Agnes’ Eve (20 January) with a view to discovering  their future husbands.

Thank you We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the planning and the organisation of the Epiphany service in Valleymount on Sunday 12th Jan. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025 This year’s prayer resource has been prepared by the community of Bose, an ecumenical monastery of brothers and sisters in northern Italy. As we celebrate 1,700 years since the Council of Nicaea, this worship service has, at its heart, the Nicene Creed. We are invited to reflect on the story of Martha’s confession of faith in Jesus as narrated in John 11: 17-27, and to contemplate Jesus’ provocative question to Martha: ‘Do you believe this?’ Texts for the main service and for the days of the octave of prayer con be found in the Spirituality and Reflection section of the website of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland: ctbi.org.uk, and on the website of the Dicastery for Promoting Christion Unity: www.chrisfianunity.va.

Prayer to St. Agnes Agnes, you refused to give up your faith; help us to be proud of our faith, to love it, to be strong in it, and to give witness to it daily. St. Agnes, patron saint of children, watch over the children of the world. keep them safe from harm; be with them in their hour of need; and always pray for them. Amen.

Prayer to St. Sebastian Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint, I call on your strength and courage to help me through this difficult trial. Your faith was so deep, a multitude of arrows could not finish you. I ask for your intercession that I may also survive that which threatens to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ. Amen.

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

Feast Days 15th Jan – St. Ita St lta was born in Co. Waterford of noble and Christion parents. Early on she set her mind on serving Christ in religious life. She founded o monastery in Killeedy, Co. Limerick, which attracted o great variety of young people. She was given the title ‘foster-mother of the saints of Ireland’. She died in 570. 16th Jan St Fursa

16th: St Fursa was born in Ireland and become one of the great monastic missionaries abroad. He went first with his brothers Foillon and Ulton to live the monastic life in East Anglia. But as great numbers continued to visit him there he left Foillon as abbot and sought refuge in Fronce around 644. A patron gave him a hermitage  at Lagny on the Marne. He died about 650 at Mezeralles and was buried in Peronne, which become o great centre of devotion to him.

Prayer to St Ita O God, who made Saint Íte of Killeedy a spiritual mother to several saints, grant us her intercession and help us emulate her love for You and her service to Your kingdom. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

POPES INTENTION FOR  January. For the right to an education. Let us pray for migrants, refugees and those affected by war, that their right to an education, which is necessary to build a better world, might always be respected.

Amen

A Prayer for the New Year As the new year begins, I look to You for our hope, joy, and peace. Give me the courage to do all that You ask of me. Please also make me brave to not do what isn’t from You. Show me how to walk in grace and embrace Your love for me even more. Amen

CARE OF THE EARTH  The water you use in the preparation of food, you can store it to later water your plants with it Water your plants or very early or late, to avoid evaporation by the sun and use water-saving hoses.

Thought of the Week After the Epiphany Jesus works signs and wonders among his people. We risk losing the full message of Christmas if we only think of Jesus as a baby in a crib.

Pope Francis has chosen the motto “Miserando atque eligendo”, meaning lowly but chosen; literally in Latin ‘by having mercy, by choosing him’.

Children did you Know? The evening before Epiphany is called Twelfth Night. Children in many European countries receive presents on this night. According to Italian folklore, an old woman named Befana goes down chimneys on Twelfth Night and delivers presents in imitation of the Wise Men. In Spain, children fill their shoes with gifts for the Magi and hope gifts will be left in thanks. In many countries a special cake, called a king cake, is eaten. Hidden inside the cake is a small object, such as a bean or a plastic baby. The person who finds the hidden object is named king or queen of the celebration.

January. January is the first month of the year. The first of January is known as New Year’s Day. It is the beginning of a fresh new year. Fittingly, January is often seen as a month of retrospection. Now that is a big word, and it means looking back on the year that recently ended and looking forward to the coming new year. For many people it is a time for change and many people make New Year’s resolutions – decisions to do something different or to make some changes in their lives. Some people decide to eat healthier food and give up sugary treats and other people take up a sport or join a gym to get fit. However, you can make all these changes during any month of the year! January is a winter month in the Northern Hemisphere and a summer month in the Southern Hemisphere. Did you know that the first records of the word January come from before the year AD 1000? The month is names after Janus, the Roman god of doorways, beginnings, and the rising and setting sun doorways, beginnings, and the rising and setting of the sun. January 6th is known as Little Christmas, and it is also the Feast of the Epiphany. According to the New Testament’s Gospels, on this date the Magi – the three wise men or kings – honoured the infant Jesus. They travelled a long way and by following the Christmas Star they finally arrived at the stable in Bethlehem to see Baby Jesus. They brought him lovely presents of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Feast of the Epiphany is known as Three King’s Day in Spain and some other Hispanic countries. In England, the celebration is called Twelfth Night. In celebration of the feast of the Epiphany in Ireland, January 6th is marked by Nollaig na mBan or woman’s Christmas. On this day it is the tradition in Ireland for women friends and family members to get together and enjoy their own Christmas, while the men folk stay at home and handle all the chores. So, you see even though January is right in the middle of winter it is a really great month – out with the old and in with the new.

A Prayer for Christmas O Loving God, At this holy time of year, we remember those who are facing hardships and ask you to fill them with strength and courage. Let us live with humanity in our hearts. Amen

Eco Christmas:  Avoid food Waste Plan Christmas menu. Write out a list. Check stocks before you shop. Only buy what you need. Cook as much as is needed. Make soup with left over or roasted veg. Freeze left over food quickly in resealable tubs. Alternatively give goodie bags to your guests to take away. Happy Christmas

CARE OF THE EARTH  Help with the shopping. Consider helping an older person with their shopping in preparation for the Christmas period. This could be sitting with them and asking what they’d like to eat on Christmas Day then getting the ingredients for them or assisting in buying gifts for their loved ones. Spending time together planning these things can be joyful and result in the elderly individual feeling like they’re a part of the festivities.

Thought of the Week “Don’t let the past steal the present. This is the message of Christmas: We are never alone.” – Taylor Caldwell

 the parish office.

Closing Date for applications is

 Friday 6th Dec at 1pm

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

The blessing with the Padre Pio relic  will take place after the 9.30 am Mass on Friday Dec 6th

Change of Mass Times For Bank Holidays and Holy Days All Masses will now be at the usual time of Morning Mass at 9.30am in the Church of Our Lady Blessington. Weekend Masses will remain the same. Saturday 6pm & Sunday 10am

Feast Days 6th Dec – St Nicholas of Myra St Nicholas was orphaned at an early age. He probably became a monk, and when the bishop of his district died, he was made Bishop of Myra of Lycia. Nicholas is distinguished for his faith, especially for his charity. His faith was so great, that with his prayer he calmed a stormy sea while on a trip to the Holy Lands. St Nicholas is the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants and brewers.

Rosary & Holy Hour   There will be no Holy Hour during the month of December. It will resume in early January. We ask that prayers for peace be offered for all who continue to suffer in the war-torn countries of the world.

Masses for Christmas Will be on 22nd and 29th Dec Names of those being prayed for in the Christmas Remembrance Masses, will be inscribed on an Altar List to be placed on the Altar. If you would like your loved one remembered, please contact the Parish Office before Thursday 19th Dec. 045 865327.

Pray & Play Group In the Coimin Centre, Every Wed 2.45pm to 4.30pm. For children of all ages with their parents, grandparents, guardians. Contact Áine 086 107 0480

A DECEMBER PRAYER Jesus, Light of the world. When I am afraid and unsure, comfort me with the light of Your presence. When Loneliness chills me, warm me with the light of Your love. When the road ahead seems dark, guide me with the light of Your way. When I don’t understand and my thoughts are unclear, fill me with the light of Your wisdom. When I seem spent like a candle consumed, replenish me with the light of Your life. Then, so filled with Your light, use me, So that I, with You, may be light for the world! Amen.

Prayer to St. Nicholas of Myra O good St. Nicholas, you who are the joy of the children, put in my heart the spirit of childhood, which the gospel speaks, and teach me to seed happiness around me. You, whose feast prepares us for Christmas, open my faith to the mystery of God made man. You good bishop and shepherd, help me to find my place in the Church and inspire the Church to be faithful to the gospel. O good Saint Nicholas, patron of children, sailors and the helpless, watch over those who pray to Jesus, your Lord and theirs, as well as over those who humble themselves before you. Bring us all in reverence to the Holy Child of Bethlehem, when true joy and peace are found. Amen.

 the parish office.

Closing Date for applications is

 Friday 6th Dec at 1pm

Our Bishops have issued a Pastoral Letter on Immigration. In it they encourage us to welcome migrants and reject voices that attempt to sow division. A new group, Blessington Welcomes, has organised an afternoon in St. Joseph’s Hall for Sunday 24th November at 2.00pm.There will be music galore. Music is a language that is universal, and playing and sharing your own music is a wonderful way of beginning to feel at home. Everyone is welcome to come and share hospitality with those who have come to live among us. The traditional Irish Tea and biscuits will also be available.

Feast Days – 30th November – St Andrew, apostle He is referred to as the First Called in the Orthodox tradition, because the book of John states that Andrew became a disciple of Christ before any of the other apostles. Saint Andrew is credited with numerous miracles. Among them, he freed the prisoner Matthias in Mirmidonia, healed a blind man, converted cannibals and the raised a dead child to life. The relics of the Apostle are known for the “manna” they secrete. It is a miraculous amber-coloured substance given to the sick. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and of Russia.

Thank you in advance for supporting your parishes. Standing Order forms are available at the back of our churches. As we continue to build the church of the future in hope, may the Lord bless us and the gifts we are able to give.

Change of Mass Times For Bank Holidays and Holy Days All Masses will now be at the usual time of Morning Mass at 9.30am in the Church of Our Lady Blessington. Weekend Masses will remain the same. Saturday 6pm & Sunday 10am

There will be no Holy Hour during the month of December. It will resume in early January. And when our earthly journey is ended,  lead us rejoicing into your kingdom, where you live forever and ever. AMEN
