Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament by which the Church in Ireland ordains ministers to serve the People of God. Through the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration by a bishop, the Holy Spirit consecrates a person for lifelong ministry.

Those ordained serve in persona Christi — in the person of Christ — in the proclamation of the Gospel, in the celebration of the sacraments, and in pastoral charity.

There are three degrees of Holy Orders:

  • Diaconate – Deacons are ordained for service of Word, liturgy and charity. They proclaim the Gospel, may preach, baptise, witness marriages and preside at funerals. In many Irish dioceses today, permanent deacons serve alongside priests in parish life.
  • Priesthood – Priests are co-workers with the bishop. They celebrate the Eucharist, hear Confessions, anoint the sick, preach, and provide pastoral leadership within parishes and pastoral areas.
  • Episcopate – Bishops receive the fullness of Holy Orders. As successors of the Apostles, they shepherd a diocese, ordain deacons and priests, and guard the faith handed on by the Church.

Discerning a Call

A vocation to ordained ministry begins with prayer and a growing desire to serve the Church. Discernment is a gradual process, supported by spiritual direction, parish involvement, and conversation with the parish priest or diocesan vocations director. Those preparing for priesthood or the permanent diaconate undertake a period of theological, spiritual and pastoral formation before ordination.

If you feel the Lord may be calling you to serve in this way, please speak with our parish priest who will be able to offer further guidance.
